Finding reasonable veterinary care is one of the most pressing challenges today’s breeder is faced with.

Before you breed finding the vet that wants you for a client and establishing that relationship is a priority.

Finding clinics that have interest in responsible breeding can be done but it may involve getting referrals from breeders in the surrounding area.

Corporate buyouts have increased veterinary prices beyond ordinary inflation.

To find and support independent clinics:

1. Start with the Independent Veterinary Practitioners Association’s directory⁠. It directs clients to Vet Local, a searchable directory of locally owned practices. Treat it as a starting point and verify ownership directly.

2. Ask who owns and controls the business. Ask whether the practicing veterinarians own it entirely, whether a corporate group or investment fund holds any interest, and who sets prices. “Privately owned” alone is ambiguous: a corporation can also be privately owned.

3. Compare a breeder-specific basket of services. Request written prices for exams, progesterone testing, pregnancy imaging, litter exams, health certificates, and planned versus emergency C-sections. Ask what anesthesia, monitoring, neonatal support, and aftercare are included.

4. Discuss an ongoing breeder relationship. Ask about litter appointments, coordinated testing, volume pricing where available, and an agreed after-hours plan. Compare equivalent care, not just the lowest headline fee.

5. Give good independent practices consistent business and referrals. Routine appointments, prompt payment, accurate reviews, and recommendations through breed clubs help sustain them. Recheck ownership periodically.

For a small-litter breed, the arithmetic is unforgiving. As a hypothetical example, an extra $3,000 in veterinary costs adds $1,000 per puppy to a three-puppy litter, before food, testing, stud fees, or your time. That illustrates why a breeder can experience a financially devastating increase even when the industry’s average percentage sounds modest.
