This week, the theme of videos being posted to social media will be mitigating sudden dogs when you’re out on a leash walk.

They will feature Ralphie who is not a classically “reactive” dog, but he does get excited sometimes, especially if there’s direct eye contact or it’s a small dog on a flexi leash.

Remember the thing to focus on is human behavior, you create your environment by mitigating distance, and implementing a high rate of reinforcement with the “YES” & Treat routine to reduce stress, fear, or excitement.

This video is from 2022. Enjoy!

Summer means more loud traffic like motorcycles. In this video, we see real time counter conditioning with three different exposures to motorcycles in a matter of minutes and by the third exposure, we see Ralphie doing much better.
Remember, the human is the biggest variable and your number one asset when on leash with a dog is your awareness and the timing with which you can supply reinforcement.

In this video we see Daisy an eight-year-old mixed breed dog who had years of reactivity towards loud traffic. Her guardian even hired a “Dog Trainer“ who choked her and made things worse. In this video, we see the magic of Mark and Pay. The “Yes”, and Treat routine when a dog orients to sudden changes in their environment. In this case it’s traffic, but this can also work for other dogs, people and sounds.

Remember, the human is the variable. When you apply the mark and pay routine to dogs who orient suddenly to environmental contrast, they develop an auto disengage and have way less stress associated to the environment.

Teaching puppies with lots of distractions is all about humans getting better with their mechanics. In this video, we see puppies at puppy kindergarten working on a sit day.

It’s all about economy of movement and having a high rate of reinforcement when you have lots of distractions. Remember the biggest variable in training any dog is the human. Once the human improves their skills, the dog does better.

Reducing leash reactivity is easy to address. The environment might be challenging however if you follow a few simple rules you’ll have less stress and more success.
When you YES & Treat a dog for sudden environmental contrast you create a memory retrieval cue.

Watch until the end for the basics on how to deal with leash reactivity.

Do you have a small puppy and a large truck? Are they a trepidatious of the truck? In this video, we see Izzy the 16 week English Lab learning to use a ramp to get in and out of a large truck.

Izzy was scared of the truck, had no trouble driving in the truck, but getting in and out was cumbersome and getting more challenging for her guardian to lift her in and out.

Full disclosure, the breeder had exposed the puppies to ramps, not having them go up or down, but exposed to them.

We also had Izzy go up and down the ramp in her yard prior to this session. Then we started the ramp with a smaller vehicle with less of an incline. Then we transitioned to the truck.

Give this video watch to see how she did!

Remember when you have a puppy who views an object as “weird” or “scary” but is essentially innocuous, meaning it does not cause fear or pain, the dog just thinks that it’s a weird thing, you can condition it by going slow, having a plan and using high value food as a reward.

Puppies need to be socialized, this is common knowledge. However puppies need counter conditioning - stress reduction along with social outings.

Carry food, learn to Mark & Pay - YES & Treat for the big ticket items such as loud traffic.

in addition, many puppies like the puppy in this video, Izzy, are very prosocial and want to meet every person that passes by.

Using the YES & Treat protocol or the leave it cue and some verbal prompting, turns the human into the most reinforcing thing in the environment, and the dog is no longer attempting to get to every person that passes by.

Remember, create some distance, stay aware use cues, and implement these protocols and you’ll have much more success and less stress when you’re out walking your puppy. Oh yeah, and it works for adult dogs too.

Behavioral flexibility takes awareness to the environment, having a flexible criteria in what you ask from a dog in that environment and understanding that dogs do not possess the moral imperative to disobey humans.
Once you understand applied behavior analysis and you understand behavioral flexibility, there’s a lot less stress in the interactions between humans and dogs.
