There’s an uptick in people wanting to drink raw milk. Please understand the risks. This article from Cornell Univeristy is focused on raw milk cheeses but previous research states raw milk alone has very high counts of the virus that can live refrigerated for long periods of time.

Raw milk cheese products contained infectious avian influenza virus when made with contaminated raw milk, creating potential health risks for consumers, according to a new study.

Allergy season is coming to a close, but still many pets are itchy! Let us know if your pet is suffering the effects of fall allergies! Our Luna has allergies year-around, but gets worse in the fall. Some dogs and cats have seasonal allergies, while others have them year-around. The causes are many! From foods to dust mites to trees, grasses, even cat dander can trigger some dogs! Unfortunately, the effects are also many. Licking and scratching excessively can lead to hair loss, dermatitis, folliculitis, scabs, and even corneal ulcers! Yes, watch for a squinty eye after your pet rubs her face on the carpet or scratches at her face and accidentally nicks her eye.

FUN FACT OF THE DAY:
Did you know that (Heartworm that infects dogs) can infect people as well? If you needed more incentive to keep your dog on prevention, this is it. While human infection is still very rare (100 human cases in the U.S. in the past 50 years), it can happen.

While less prevalent than infections in dogs, Dirofilariasis (Heartworm infection) can occur in people by transmission through bites from infected mosquitos. Humans are accidental hosts and can’t contribute to transmission of the disease, and the heartworms don’t mature and block blood vessels in the pulmonary vasculature as they do in dogs. Instead, in human infections, the larva travel to the lungs and create inflammatory lesions. Most affected people are asymptomatic and the nodules created by the worm larva in the lungs are often found incidentally when a person has a chest x-ray. They often don’t require treatment, but unfortunately there is no simple test to differentiate the lesions in the lungs from cancer or fungal/bacterial infection without biopsy or aspiration of the affected lung tissue!

Dirofilaria are parasitic roundworms that infect humans, dogs, and a variety of other mammals.
