Dogs need to be physically AND mentally stimulated every day. Throwing a ball aimlessly requires no thoughts from your dog. Instead, use the ball as a reward in your training. Make them think and youāll see much better results!

TRAINING TIP TUESDAY: RECALLS!
If you find yourself repeatedly calling your dog to come back and getting absolutely no responseā¦ STOP CALLING THEM.
Every time you call your dog and they donāt respond, you are teaching them itās fine and probably more fun to ignore you. Instead follow these tips to build yourself a reliable recall:
ā¢Go back to the foundations! Keep your dog on a long-line so they donāt get the opportunity to ignore you. Remember, practice makes perfect so donāt let them practice the ābadā.
ā¢Teach them what ācomeā means with this game:
oWith your dog on a leash (in a non-distracting area), start by tossing a cookie a few feet away from you.
oAs your dog is getting the cookie, start running backwards away from your dog and call them to come. (Dogs come a lot easier if we are moving away from them rather than marching towards them).
oWhen he catches up to you, reward him heavily from your hand for being in your space. Make this FUN!
oToss another cookie then start the game again!
ā¢Add in distractions slowly. If you want your dog to listen in every situation, you need to train them in every situation. Start:
o Inside your home
o In your backyard
o In your front yard
o In an EMPTY park or parking lot
o Near a busy area
o In a busy area
o Donāt advance until your dog masters the step you are on!
ā¢Donāt only call your dog when itās time to go home or āend the funā. Build positive associations with recall as opposed to it always being the signal fun is over.
ā¢Remember there is no magic trick that is going to make your dog behave differently right away, especially if you are trying to change an old behavior. Training new behaviors takes time!
