This my friends is exactly why you always, ALWAYS check the nest every day.

I brought this bucket of kiddos in because their mother was drenching them in urine. It’s too cold to be soaking wet let alone be covered in urine.

Lots and lots of people will say “oh don’t touch the babies or mom will never take care of them!” Well I’m here to say as a rabbit breeder with almost 6 years of experience (20 years of owning rabbits though) you most certainly need to touch those baby bunnies every single day. They need to be checked on to make sure they are getting fed, no dead ones in the nest and that they aren’t growing in an unhygienic environment. It is a myth that mother rabbits won’t return to their babies after they are touched by a human.
These babies would have all froze and or gotten pneumonia if I hadn’t brought them in, washed and dried them and warmed them back up.

From one rabbit breeder to others PLEASE always have your hands in the nest and check on those babies!

Edit: these babies went back out with their momma oncethey were completely dried off. I cleaned their nest and returned them and momma went right in to feed. She’s a good momma and is taking good care of her kits. If she continues to urinate on them I will take I will take further action but as of now they are just fine with their momma. 🙂

Our big handsome Leo (aka Leonardo)! I love the way he’s turning out! He just turned a year old at the end of September and I’m loving his big ole head! Bucks heads tend to grow until they are 2- 2 1/2 years of age so we are just starting to get a nice Bucky look to our Leo!

One thing I do hope to work on with Leo’s line is strengthening those ankles! Either than that I just love this guy!

So let’s talk chocolate color genetics really quick
Just a little bit

I won’t be diving too much into gene codes I will be putting it into simple terms.

The chocolate genetic is a tough genetic to start with when you don’t have another unrelated chocolate to go with it. Chocolate isn’t a gene that just “pops up” you have to have two Chocolate carriers in order to get chocolate.

That being said all of misty and kohans babies are self black

“Wait, I thought you said you’d get chocolate and lilac!?”

Well yes, I did believe I would because Misty has lilac 3 separate times in her pedigree and lilac is diluted chocolate, meaning she was a chocolate carrier. And as I mentioned in the beginning you have to have two chocolate carriers to produce chocolate.

Unfortunately I just proved misty being a chocolate carrier to be untrue by breeding her to Kohan. If Misty was a true chocolate carrier and had true lilac in her pedigree she would have produced chocolate and lilac and nothing else being bred to Kohan.

This is why it is important to know genetics. True lilac doesn’t just pop up out of random rabbits just like chocolate. Both parents have to carry chocolate in order to get a true lilac and true chocolate.

So I hate to be the bearer of unfortunate news but Misty and Kohan’s babies are all solid, self black. No blue, no chocolate and no lilacs they are all black. But they are and will 100% be true chocolate carriers. Chocolate carriers are best if they are self colored (blue, black, lilac)

Now personally for me I couldn’t be happier with a true self black in my chocolate program because it’s sooo hard to find an actual self black that isn’t steel based. I will be holding back one or two 🤣.

The reason I will be keeping back a few daughters is to then line breed back to kohan. I want to further my chocolate line and create more lines but I can only do that if I have two chocolate carriers. Because there is only one known pair in the United States of true chocolate giants we will have to line breed in order to get more chocolate.

I hope that helps explain everything and kind of bring the chocolate gene to light and how to achieve it.
Also why it’s so important to tell the truth on pedigrees! Blue continental giants can be tricky to tell the difference from blue to lilac if their color has been diluted/washed out enough. The correct color of blue is a dark Cobalt blue. Anything else is washed out and does resemble lilac even though it’s not. The only way to get lilac is through chocolate.

I’d be happy to bestow more knowledge but i don’t want to bore you all! Rabbit genetics are very fascinating but complicated.

Valka has grown into such an incredibly magnificent doe! Her head….. I mean what else do I say?! She’s just too perfect for words!

One thing I could not get her to do today was pose but I don’t blame her, I wouldn’t want to cooperate if I’m a week away from popping! 🤭

We are hoping and praying Valka is bred and due soon! She was bred to our biggest buck, Nero!

Misty and babies are still doing good! But I’m going to wait until her babies are 10-14 days old (eyes are open) before showing pictures. She had a really large litter and I don’t want to bum out anyone if they don’t all make it.

What a huge difference just a few weeks makes! 3 weeks to 10 weeks! Y’all these guys grow incredibly fast between day 1 to 12 weeks old (and after, they just can go to their new homes by 12 weeks 🙂)

I have a lot of people complain about the cost of these guys but I will let you all know that to get a bunny from 2oz to 10-12lbs in 12 weeks it takes a lot of good quality feed to get them to a healthy weight and maintain a steady growth rate! Babies’ food bowls should never go empty!

The bigger the bunny the more food they’re going to eat!
Something a lot of newbies don’t know when they get into breeding these massive rabbits 😉 these guys eat a lot! If they aren’t fed properly you will not have healthy big bunnies.

Misty had her babies! Lots of them too! I won’t be showing them for a bit because she’s a first time momma and I don’t want to get hopes up too soon. But they are here!

It’s FREEZING 🥶 out but I tried to get miss peppermint patty to cooperate for F2 Himi giants because sometimes the cold gets the giant girls “in the mood” 🤣

Welp, not peppermint patty! lol and I don’t blame her!
But y’all just look at her squishy face!! She has the top best temperament out of any rabbit I’ve ever owned! Never has scratched, kicked or bit me! She just snuggles 💕
