This my friends is exactly why you always, ALWAYS check the nest every day.
I brought this bucket of kiddos in because their mother was drenching them in urine. It’s too cold to be soaking wet let alone be covered in urine.
Lots and lots of people will say “oh don’t touch the babies or mom will never take care of them!” Well I’m here to say as a rabbit breeder with almost 6 years of experience (20 years of owning rabbits though) you most certainly need to touch those baby bunnies every single day. They need to be checked on to make sure they are getting fed, no dead ones in the nest and that they aren’t growing in an unhygienic environment. It is a myth that mother rabbits won’t return to their babies after they are touched by a human.
These babies would have all froze and or gotten pneumonia if I hadn’t brought them in, washed and dried them and warmed them back up.
From one rabbit breeder to others PLEASE always have your hands in the nest and check on those babies!
Edit: these babies went back out with their momma oncethey were completely dried off. I cleaned their nest and returned them and momma went right in to feed. She’s a good momma and is taking good care of her kits. If she continues to urinate on them I will take I will take further action but as of now they are just fine with their momma. 🙂
