Introducing the fascinating African Slender-snouted Crocodile! 🐊

Found in the forested rivers and wetlands of tropical Central and Western Africa, this species is named for its long and slender snout. These narrow jaws are adapted to extract prey such as fish and crustaceans from crevices and holes in the river.

An incredibly interesting behavior of this species is that they have been recorded climbing trees! Well, at least low hanging branches and angled trunks. While they do not have the physical ability to truly climb trees like leopards or monkeys, they have been documented using their jaws and claws to make their way to these elevated spots. It is theorized that this behavior allows for easier basking and provides better vantage points for surveillance of food and predators.

You can find our African Slender-snouted Crocodiles at the Gator Arena!

As you walk through Reptile Gardens, you might notice that some of our beds are specially designed for pollinators! 🌸 🐝

These flower beds consist of native species and flowers that a variety of pollinators rely upon for food. These include species such as Milkweed, Echinacea, Rudbeckia, Gaillardia, and Beebalm.

By helping support our local pollinators, we help support the world we live in. 🌼 🦋 🌎

Up, up and away in my beautiful balloon!! ✨

It was quite an exciting morning here at Reptile Gardens as the hot air balloons from the Stratobowl Historic Hot Air Balloon Launch touched down in and around the Reptile Gardens parking lot!!

Every year, Reptile Gardens is happy to provide a safe space for the ballons and workers to land.

What an amazing sight!

Today is International Vulture Awareness Day, and we are showing that bald really is beautiful! ✨

Due to their role as scavengers, vultures are often seen in a negative light as gross and dirty animals, but nothing could be further from the truth! Vultures have developed a variety of traits to stay clean, from their bald heads that prevent rotting meat from sticking to them, to their stomach acid which can kill diseases such as salmonella, cholera, and even anthrax! Vultures are a dead end for disease!

Today is a day to bring awareness to this incredible group of birds, and the essential role they play in keeping our world clean and healthy!

Learn more about our vultures during our daily Bird Shows, and say hello to our King Vulture, St. John, down along Avian Avenue!

Shelly decided it was a lovely day to enjoy a walk through the gardens, and admire all the beautiful flowers! 🌸 🌼

Ever wondered what that loud buzzing is in the trees at the end of summer? It's Cicadas!

Cicadas spend the majority of their lives underground in their nymph stage, but emerge to shed their exoskeletons to become adults. Most species emerge every year, but there are a few cicada species that emerge in large "broods" every 13 or 17 years. Their lives as adults are quite short, during which time they mate, lay their eggs, and begin the cycle again.

We love hearing the cicadas every summer here at Reptile Gardens.
