Some of you may know that we offer a scent class called Urban Rat Hunt. This has been an amazing class—every dog so far has loved it and picked it up quickly.
This class wouldn’t be possible without the help of our rats.
We adopted five baby girls last fall, and they began training at just 6 weeks old. They work in specialized boxes they can’t escape from, and the dogs can’t harm them. Inside, they have cozy blankets and get special treats, so they’re comfortable and rewarded while they wait for a big nose to sniff them out.
These girls aren’t just workers—they’re family. Each one is full of personality and love. They enjoy daily enrichment time (at least 20 minutes of play outside their enclosure every day).
A few months ago, we noticed that Silver Bullet (aka Bullet) was gaining weight and slowing down. She had always been the fastest of the five, so this was unusual. In December, she went to the vet and was treated for a bacterial infection. She seemed to recover fully.
Fast forward to March—she became bloated again, her whiskers curled, and her fur started falling out. Back to the vet we went.
Surgery was the only option.
During a very intensive procedure, it was discovered that her uterus was 10x its normal size and full of infection. It ruptured during surgery, requiring extensive flushing, and her risk of complications doubled.
She came home barely moving, and we weren’t sure she would survive.
We were up every four hours—changing her heating pad, offering food and water, and giving two syringes of medication every 12 hours. (If you’ve ever tried medicating a rat… you know it’s no easy task!) On top of that, we kept up with round-the-clock care to keep her warm and stable.
It was touch and go for several days. There were nights I went to sleep thinking it might be the last time I’d see her alive.
But Bullet is a fighter.
Little by little, she started improving… until she decided to rip all her stitches out. 😩
Back to the vet we went! Dr. Burk made her a custom cone, and we added a healing cream to her care routine along with her medications.
I’m so happy to share that after three weeks—Bullet is back! The cone is off, she’s eating well, climbing everything, and reunited with her sisters. She won’t be back in the hiding boxes just yet, but she’ll still be helping by keeping waiting dogs entertained from her travel cage.
I love this little rat so much, and I’m incredibly grateful she chose to stay with us a while longer. ❤️🐀 #❤️🐀
