Reminder on these hot days when your pets are outside to keep them safe🐶🐾🐱
HYDRATION
** They dehydrate quickly in the heat, give them plenty of fresh, clean water in a tip proof bowl. Keep in mind metal bowls heat up quickly in the sun.
** Make sure they have water both indoors & outdoors
SHADE & SHELTER
** Provide shaded areas throughout the day.
** Bring your pets indoors during extreme heat.
WALKING/RUNNING
** Avoid hot pavement, which can burn paws.
** If you must go out during hot weather, bring water for your pet & take frequent breaks in the shade.
VEHICLE SAFETY
** NEVER leave pets unattended in a parked car even with windows cracked, cars can heat up quickly to dangerous temperatures.
HEATSTROKE
** Be aware of signs of heatstroke which can include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy and vomiting.
** If you suspect heatstroke immediately move your pet to a cool place, offer water (don’t force it) and seek veterinary attention.
**. Keep an eye on senior pets and those with flat faces as they are more susceptible to heatstroke.
WATER SAFETY
** Be cautious with pools and bodies of water. Supervise your pets closely - not all dogs are good swimmers.
** Keep your pet from drinking pool water which contains chlorine and other chemicals.
** If your dog is on a boat, just like kids, it’s a good idea to have them wear a floatation device (again, not all dogs are good swimmers).
FUR/COAT
** Avoid completely shaving your pet. The layers of their coats actually protect them from overheating and sunburn. A seasonal trim is okay and brushing cats more often than normal can help prevent problems caused by heat.
