❗️❗️❗️❗️RABIES ADVISORY❗️❗️❗️ ❗️
On September 15, 2021 a Fox attacked a man’s bike tire while he was riding his bike near Brooklyn Mountain Road and Columbia Trail in Hopatcong. The Fox was sent to the State Laboratory for testing. It was confrmed on September 23rd that the Fox was indeed positive for Rabies.

We ask all our residents to be alert at all times when outdoors with their pets. DO NOT leave your pet unattended outdoors.

An animal with rabies may appear sick or lethargic, have problems swallowing, drool, or salivate excessively. A wild animal may appear tamer than usual, extremely aggressive and some animals have no visible symptoms.

An animal with rabies could infect other wild or domestic animals that have not been vaccinated against rabies.

All domestic animals should be vaccinated against rabies and all wildlife contact should be avoided, especially raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats, and coyotes.

Residents and visitors are advised to take the following precautions:

•Vaccinate pets against rabies and keep vaccinations up to date.
•Keep pets under direct supervision so they do not come into contact with wild animals
•If a pet is bitten/in contact with a wild animal, seek veterinary assistance immediately and contact The Hopatcong Police Department for Animal Control Services at 973-398-5000. Even if previously vaccinated always call!
•If you are bitten or exposed to blood/saliva of an animal, contact your physician immediately.

Rabies is a fatal disease. Please keep your family and pets safe.
