This girl has been hard at work conditioning for this years NAVHDA invitational. We are soo excited and can hardly wait to see all our friends from all over the country!

Conditioning isn’t just about building endurance—it’s about preparing your dog for the environment they’ll actually be asked to perform in.

At the NAVHDA Invitational, dogs are expected to run a one-hour brace, and the reality is that we don’t get to choose the weather, the terrain, or the cover. It could be cool and damp, or hot, dry, and demanding. The dogs that excel aren’t always the fastest—they’re the ones that have been conditioned both physically and mentally for whatever the day brings.

That means training in a variety of conditions. Run hills. Work through thick cover. Train in the heat safely, train in the wind, and expose your dog to different footing and environments. Build their cardiovascular fitness gradually, strengthen their muscles, and give them time to recover between workouts.

The key is consistency—not intensity.

Slow and steady conditioning always wins. You can’t cram months of fitness into a few weekends before hunting season or a major test. Just like a human athlete, a bird dog needs time to develop endurance, resilience, and confidence.

A well-conditioned dog isn’t just capable of going the distance—they recover faster, stay mentally sharp longer, and are better prepared to perform when it matters most.

Train for the conditions you might face, not just the ones you hope for.

People often ask me what it’s like to train so many different breeds—especially the rare ones.

The truth is, good dog trainers don’t become good because they only work with one breed. They become good because they learn to train the dog standing in front of them.

Every dog is an individual.

A high-drive hunting dog isn’t going to learn the same way as a sensitive companion breed. A primitive breed won’t always respond like a retriever. Some dogs need more motivation, others need more patience, and some simply need you to change your approach.

The best trainers don’t force every dog into the same program. They adapt. They understand temperament, genetics, breed purpose, and the goals of the owner. They recognize what the dog was bred to do and build training around those instincts—not against them.

Some of the hardest dogs I’ve trained have taught me the most. They’ve challenged me to think differently, communicate more clearly, and become a better trainer. Those lessons are worth more than any easy success.

Know the breed. Respect what generations of purposeful breeding created. Train the dog in front of you, not the one you wish you had.

Do that, and you’ll rarely go wrong.

Every dog has something to teach us—if we’re willing to listen.

More and more we get the opportunity to work with rare breeds and we are pleased with what we seen. We look forward to seeing Iris and Ellie again 🙌

It's not often Iris gets a chance to be on birds these days. But when she does, she looks better and better 🔥

UPLAND NAVHDA | NAVHDA Versatile Hunting Dogs

05/31/2026

At SilverBay GunDogs, our top priority has always been producing dogs that are truly prepared for the hunting season. Before titles, ribbons, or test scores, we focus on developing a dog that can confidently handle wild birds, changing terrain, multiple gunners, hunting partners, and the real-world situations they will encounter in the field.

Our training methods are designed to create versatile, reliable hunting companions first and foremost. As a result, many of our dogs seamlessly transition into the off-season and successfully compete in Master Hunter, NAVHDA Utility, and other advanced testing programs without missing a beat.

From the smallest pointing breeds to the largest versatile hunting dogs—and everything in between—we tailor our approach to bring out the best in each individual dog while preserving style, drive, and natural ability.

Check out this video of Felix absolutely slamming on the brakes and locking up on point, while Tivy comes in with a beautiful honor. Moments like these are the result of a solid foundation, consistency, and training that translates from test fields to wild bird country.

🐦 Hunt-ready.
🏆 Test-proven.
🤝 Built for teamwork.
