🐾 Big News in Animal Welfare 🐾
As of January 1, 2026, the Netherlands has taken a major step for animal welfare by banning the breeding, buying, and selling of new Scottish Fold and Sphynx cats. The reason? Growing concern over serious, built-in health problems tied directly to how these breeds look.
Before worries set in: current owners can absolutely keep and love their pets. This law focuses on stopping future breeding and sales—not punishing families who already share their lives with these cats.
Why these breeds?
Scottish Folds
Those adorable folded ears come from a genetic condition called osteochondrodysplasia. Unfortunately, that same gene weakens cartilage throughout the body, often leading to severe, painful arthritis, lameness, and even immobility in joints, tails, and feet.
Sphynx Cats
While known for their hairless look, Sphynx cats face high rates of heart disease (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy) and ongoing skin issues. Their lack of fur—and in some cases underdeveloped nostrils—can also affect skin health and breathing. As a result, they tend to have one of the shortest lifespans among pedigreed cats.
Why this matters beyond the Netherlands
🇳🇱 A global precedent: Similar actions are already happening in places like Flanders (Belgium), with growing concern in Germany and Austria. Northern Europe is increasingly drawing a firm line against breeding animals for traits that cause predictable suffering.
⚖️ The ethical breeding debate: This move reignites tough conversations about other extreme conformations—think Bulldogs, Pugs, and Persians—and where we draw the line between aesthetics and welfare.
🇺🇸 What about the U.S.? There’s no federal ban here, but decisions like this could fuel state-level discussions. Enforcement is tricky, especially with existing pets, but the conversation is clearly gaining momentum.
The core issue
This ban targets what’s often called “torture breeding”—when animals are intentionally bred for traits that knowingly cause pain, illness, or reduced quality of life. It’s a welfare standard that’s gaining real traction, and one that puts the animal’s well-being first.
At Naomi’s Paws & Claws, we believe love for animals also means asking hard questions about how breeding choices affect their lives. 🐶🐱💙
Progress isn’t always easy—but it can mean a healthier future for the animals we adore.
