Our 2nd Senior Sunday Pet is Kirby. He is 6 months shy of hitting the Senior category (8 years old is the norm) but we don't want him still living at the WakeGov Pets: Wake County Animal Center when he hits that milestone.

When you look at his older pictures you may recognize him as Crusty Crab, so named because life handed him a few challenges early on, and he arrived looking a bit like he'd been through one too many adventures. After a regimen of omega 3, a much-needed dental makeover and with a spa appointment booked, Kirby is embracing his fresh start with style and his new name. This guy is polishing up nicely and proving that it's never too late for a second chance.

In playgroup, he happily ran around with a female partner and clearly enjoyed the outing. When he realized she was a girl, he had a brief moment of misplaced enthusiasm, but he took her correction well and adjusted appropriately - showing that he can read cues and respond nicely.

Kirby is young at heart, engages well with people, and listens nicely. He already knows how to sit and is very treat motivated, making him a great candidate for continued training. He was easy to collar and walk, though he can be jumpy at first in excitement.

Inside the building, Kirby can be reactive due to all the noise and commotion, but this likely ties back to limited exercise and stimulation. With regular outlets for his energy, this jumpiness should calm down, letting his better qualities shine through.

Although he is heartworm positive, it is treatable and not contagious. Friends of Wake County Animal Center has provided a $600 sponsorship to help cover the cost of treatment. Email [email protected] for more information.

If you're interested in learning more about him, please reach out to our volunteer matchmakers at [email protected] with the subject line "Kirby 265382".

But even better would be to meet him at WakeGov Pets: Wake County Animal Center. Adoption hours are 12-6 every day. Located at 820 Beacon Lake Dr in Raleigh NC.

Old Feller is our Senior Sunday Pet from WakeGov Pets: Wake County Animal Center today.

Old Feller is a really good dog with a calm, gentle and easygoing personality. He is easy to leash and walked well on leash. He remained a sweetheart and very cooperative as staff cleaned the wound under his eye.

He was found as a stray so we are still learning more about him. He may be our next silver fox attracting all the ladies though. In his dog test (see comments) he remained a gentleman striking an almost aloof stance as Cardi B pranced and played around him. Cardi B is a spicy senior girl who clearly wanted Old Feller's attention. Maybe he wanted to meet all of the girls before choosing his playmate.

We know he would rather be lounging at your house cuddling on the sofa then in a noisy shelter environment. If you like senior dogs this guy is a prize.

You can meet this Casanova at the WakeGov Pets: Wake County Animal Center today and every day during adoption hours of 12-6. Located at 820 Beacon Lake Dr in Raleigh.

54 animals arrived at the WakeGov Pets: Wake County Animal Center this week and are still there today waiting to be reclaimed by their owners or adopted. Plus, so many kittens. You won't see the kittens until they are old enough and weigh enough to be adopted but the shelter's foster homes are full of meows.
Please SHARE this post to help reunite lost pets.
Please visit the shelter (open for adoptions 12-6 every day) and ADOPT if you are able to.
Remember:
On Stray Hold means they are waiting to see if an owner reclaims. You can visit and put a Pending Adoption on them in case their owner never comes.
In Foster means the animal lives off-site with a family waiting for adoption.
Follow the link in comments for the Pet Gallery because not every animal will be available for adoption. You can find all of the info available on the animals in the Pet Gallery. Click on the animal you are interested in to read more details. If In Foster follow the directions there to contact the foster family.

Rey is still looking for her forever home.

Rey is still looking for her forever home.

Rey is a shy, reserved pup who's been through more than she lets on. She came to us with some unknown wounds-both inside and out-but with time, care, and a lot of love, she's healing beautifully. She arrived along with a neutered, unwounded male, but so far, she prefers to coexist rather than engage in play with another male.

Though cautious at first, Rey has a quiet strength that shines through in the little moments: a soft glance, a slow tail wag, the way she leans in just a bit closer each day. She's not one for loud noises or busy places, but in a calm home with a patient heart, she'll flourish.

Rey was briefly tested with cats by a volunteer-she's very timid about getting in the car but then rode quietly. Not particularly interested in the cats, she was more focused on exploring the house. It's possible her reduced energy could be a result of her past injuries, so it's best to go slow and supervise her cat interactions in the beginning.

In playgroups, Rey is a bit of a timid gal. She's shy and can become shutdown, even in her kennel. However, she perked up around another shy male dog though he wasn't interested in interacting. We tried pairing her with a more playful dog, but it was a bit too much for her, and she became a little squawky. We'll need to find her the "Goldilocks" partner-someone gentle and dainty, who can bring out her quiet confidence without overwhelming her.

Although she is heartworm positive, it is treatable and not contagious. Friends of Wake County Animal Center has provided a $600 sponsorship to help cover the cost of treatment.

As we gear up for the big game tonight we thought we'd take a moment to compare the Canes Seth to our adoptable Seth. What do you think?
