Our Senior Sunday Pet today is Brownie - A Sweet, Smart Senior Ready to Steal Your Heart. Brownie is a 9-yo gentle lady with a loving spirit and a lifetime of wisdom behind her warm eyes. She's the perfect companion for someone wanting a calm, affectionate dog who still enjoys learning, bonding, and sharing peaceful moments together.

On leash, Brownie is a star - she doesn't pull and shows no reactivity, making her a delightful walking partner. She takes her treats gently and warms up to new people quickly, always happy to make a new friend.

This clever girl loves to learn and already knows sit, down, and shake. Even as a low-energy senior, she enjoys engaging her mind and proudly showing off her tricks.

Brownie is dog selective and is a firm no for sharing a home with cats. In playgroups, she started off stiff but appropriate, showing she can be polite with calm introductions. However, she became uncomfortable when her playmate approached a volunteer for attention. Because of this, we recommend caution and slow, careful introductions if Brownie is to meet or interact with other dogs.
At her core, Brownie is a loving, loyal, people-focused dog who wants nothing more than to be someone's steady, sweet companion. If you're looking for a mellow friend who enjoys affection, quiet time, and showing off her tricks, Brownie may be the perfect match.

Come meet this wonderful senior girl - she's ready to bring warmth and love into her forever home. https://pets.wake.gov/gallery/264851

If you're interested in learning more about her, please reach out to our volunteer matchmakers at [email protected] with the subject "Brownie, 264851".

But why wait for an email? - come visit her at the WakeGov Pets: Wake County Animal Center. They are open for adoptions 12-6 every day. Located at 820 Beacon Lake Dr in Raleigh NC,

103 animals became a part of the WakeGov Pets: Wake County Animal Center in the last week and are still waiting for their family to find them, either the family who lost them or a new family to love.
Add that to the 100 dogs and 70 cats on the adoption floor, plus 105 in foster homes and WHEW the shelter is full.
Adoption fees are being waived through tomorrow to make room for the new animals arriving every day. If you have room to ADOPT, please visit the WakeGov Pets: Wake County Animal Center located at 820 Beacon Lake Dr in Raleigh NC. They are open for adoptions 12-6 every day. You can see all of the animals at the shelter at https://pets.wake.gov/gallery.
Please check there to find out all of the info that is known about the animal including whether they will be placed up for adoption. If it says NOT YET AVAILABLE, they are on stray hold. You can still meet the animal and place a PENDING ADOPTION as long as their profile does not say "will not be placed up for adoption." If their owner never comes they can go home with you.
If you have lost a pet, GO TO THE SHELTER. Do not rely solely on pictures. It is surprising how different a pet can look after just a few days lost.
Please SHARE and help these animals find a home. If you look at the pictures you will see many who look astounded that they are in the shelter and are asking you to come provide that loving home they so deserve. https://pets.wake.gov/gallery

Important read on the state of shelters in North Carolina.
What can you do to help. ( NOTE not all will apply to every families situation).
1. Spay and neuter your pets; we already have to many unwanted pets. Message us if you need suggestions of low cost options.
2. Become a shelter volunteer at your local shelter. Here is the link to become a volunteer at the Wake County Animal Center: https://www.wake.gov/departments-government/animal-services/how-help/volunteer-program
3. Become a foster home for your local shelter or rescue. Here is a link to become a foster for Wake County. NOTE: WCAC seldom has puppies or small dogs in need of foster. https://www.wake.gov/departments-government/animal-services/how-help/foster-program
4. If family members are moving in with you, please consider allowing their pets to come with them if it's safe for everyone. Use crates or gates if needed.
5. To save money consider buying pet food in bulk. Do your research first by calculating how much you pay per pound and then compare that to the price of a larger-sized bag. For example, if your 3-lb bag of cat food costs $7, you’re paying $2.33/pound, but if you buy a 13-lb bag for $18, you’re only paying $1.38/pound. That’s a huge savings that adds up over time.Check sales and buy an extra bag of treats of food when sales are good. Sometimes manufactures send out email coupons so sign up with your pets brand for their emails.
6. Keep pets up to date with routine vaccines and flea/tick and HW prevention( dogs). Many common problems can be avoided by keeping pets up to date. Utilize free and low cost community clinics for things like rabies shots to save money. Get your pet microchipped.
7. When looking to adopt consider shelters and rescues first vs purchasing a pet. Shelters often have very low fees. Wake County has fees waived through Sunday.
8. Consider the health/grooming needs of the pet before you get them; example some pets must be groomed professionally to keep their coats healthy. Some dogs like french bulldogs, sharpeis, and english bulldogs can be extremely expensive to own/ maintain.
9. Make sure your pets are getting appropriate exercise and stimulation. Take your dog on a walk engage with your cat. It's good for you and for them. Exercise and stimulation can curb some unwanted behaviors.
10. Consider creating a small pet savings account for unexpected medical situations or pet deposits if you have to move suddenly. Even $300- $500 set aside can make a huge difference when emergencies come up.

This may be one of the better intake photos! Holy FRIJOLES - that smile is just everything!!!!

Volunteers have all agreed that this is the face of Frijoles’ true personality. He is sweet, goofy, easy to collar, and a good walker (kindly stopping for cuddle sessions along the way).

He has not been at WakeGov Pets: Wake County Animal Center long enough to be dog tested (and dogs are never cat / kid tested for safety reasons), but what he is doing is winning the hearts of all the volunteers.

If you're interested in learning more about him, please reach out to our volunteer matchmakers at [email protected] with the Subject line "Frijoles 265081" or come visit him any day from noon until 6 PM at 820 Beacon Lake Dr. in Raleigh NC

Lottie is a 2-year-old medium terrier mix with a calm, confident personality. She's affectionate and enjoys being near people, happy to rest her head on your knee and keep you company, making even the coldest days feel cozy.

In playgroup, Lottie stayed composed, enjoying the company of other dogs without getting caught up in rowdier play. She prefers to observe or run alongside her friends rather than jump into roughhousing.

Already familiar with basic commands like "sit" and eager to please, Lottie is a gentle, well-mannered companion who would be the perfect partner for quiet walks, warm blankets, and those cozy winter evenings by your side.

If you're interested in learning more about her, please reach out to our volunteer matchmakers at [email protected] with the Subject line "Lottie 263636" or visit 820 Beacon Lake Dr. in Raleigh NC any day from noon until 6 PM.

Huge shout-out in order to !

Our boy, pictured below, needed a miracle and the very thing many rescue animals need but don't get, TIME! We needed a place for him to hang out for 2 weeks until we could secure a foster for him, and Camp Bow Wow offered to keep him completely free of charge. Not only did they board him for free, they bathed and groomed him, as well. When we picked him up to transport to his foster, the staff was highly engaged with him, full of stories of his stay, and clearly attentive to his needs. He left Camp Bow Wow exercised, cared for, and loved. We owe them all of our gratitude, and the sweet boy pictured below owes them his life. We're beyond thankful for good people and our community. From the bottom of our hearts and the bottom of his paws, thank you Camp Bow Wow! Be on the lookout for an update as this beautiful husky settles in with his foster and becomes ready to find his forever home! And if you need a place to board or are looking for a doggy day care spot, check out our friends at Camp Bow Wow Cary!
