Dogs generally pull about 60 per cent harder on a leash when wearing a padded harness compared with a collar, even when the equipment is marketed as “anti pull” – putting the people walking them at risk of injury.

Some dogs – especially smaller breeds – pull with a force more than twice their body weight on the collar, potentially damaging their throats, says Erin Perry at Southern Illinois University.

“It’s really very shocking,” she says. “The dogs are almost choking themselves on that collar repeatedly. But the harnesses in our study just didn’t inhibit pulling in any way, and that’s definitely a wake-up call – especially because of the risk to owners.”

Staring contest

Been pretty slack lately about posting, but here are a few Board and Trains that have come through lately. Penny a Brittney Spaniel finished up a few weeks ago and did so good with her follow ups after training here. Then Cheyanne a 9 year old Giant Schnauzer who is a week in and doing so good.

Little puppy Tumbles

Phineas is here to learn some manners and basic obedience. He's doing great after only a few hours. Looking forward to the next few weeks of training with this fun guy!!

Somebody was frisky and a little bitey in the cool weather. Heel needs cleaning up but love her enthusiasm!

Sage is doing well with her urge to eat anything with wheels. It's not perfect, but she's not ripping my arm out of the socket anymore.

Casey will be my last board for the year as I'm taking a break. I will still be doing private lessons so let me know if you need to tighten up on those manners or obedience before your family comes to visit during the holiday season.
