❄️ Winter Tip from the Sanctuary:

As temperatures drop, one of the most important winter care practices — for farm animals and pets — is making sure they always have access to unfrozen, drinkable water. 💧❄️

When water freezes, animals naturally drink less, which can quickly lead to dehydration, impaction colic in equines, and weakened immune systems across all species. Even mild dehydration can make winter much harder on their bodies.

Here are simple ways to keep water flowing all winter long:
🔥 Heated water buckets or trough heaters help maintain a safe temperature and encourage consistent drinking.
🧊 Break and remove ice often if you don’t have access to heaters — even a thin layer can stop animals from drinking.
💧 Offer warm water when possible — many animals naturally drink more when it’s slightly warmed.
🛠️ Check cords and heaters daily to ensure safety and proper function.

This small, daily habit makes a huge difference in your animals’ winter health and comfort.

Meet Cara, our gorgeous, shaggy-coated Suri alpaca—and the clear winner of this month’s resident vote! 🦙💛
Cara originally came from a former breeding operation that closed, and she was rehomed to BDFS.
She’s sweet, curious, always the first to greet visitors, and she’s known for one very special trait…
💋 Cara gives kisses. On the lips.
We’re so grateful she’s part of our sanctuary family—and we know you adore her just as much as we do.
