Someone wrote us requesting help with 2 cats who "live" near the Carilion OB/Gyn clinic in Radford. They are looking for someone who can feed them on the weekends, as well as help with TNR. Is anyone interested in feeding these cats, starting tomorrow? If so, we'll put you in touch with the lady. Thanks! It "takes a village," as they say.

NATIONAL MUTT DAY
🐕
“Dogs are special and there are oodles of national (and international) holidays to prove it. But unlike most of our doggy days, National Mutt Day, on July 31, focuses on the mixed breed dogs who sometimes get overlooked. This holiday inspires people to learn more about adopting one.

National Mutt Day also brings attention to the many great mixed breed dogs in need of homes. In fact, they benefit from the spotlight so much that we celebrate mixed breed dogs not just once, but twice a year! On both July 31 and December 2, join us in celebrating all the mutts and mixed breed dogs that make our lives so great.”

We have a little Border Collie mix, Bree, who is still looking for a home! Not sure how she'd do at rounding up these sheep, but she's a smart girl, and would likely be a great agility course pup.

We have kittens! Working on bios now. They will be ready for adoption mid-June. They had a "feral" mom, but the volunteer managed to move them to her garage as soon as baby was born and Mom is friendly now too. All of the kittens are just a joy to be around! Please e-mail us at [email protected] for an application. Juniper (female) is not listed because she has a home identified, and we have one to get photos of.

Well, we have more sad news. Our sweet girl, Mya, also crossed the Rainbow Bridge this week, after only 5 years with her wonderful adopted Mom, Karen Walter. Here is Karen's e-mail:
"In December 2016, I adopted Mya- picture attached.
She was my queen for 4,5 years and we loved each other very much.
This morning I had to rush my girl to the hospital. After copious tests, it was determined that Mya had kidney failure.
I put her down, with me and her puppy daddy holding her.

She was so very loved and you gave me one of my greatest gifts. Thank you for her beautiful spirit. She was very aggressive when I got her, and she turned into a sweet loving girl."

Mya had a bad first few years of life. Her "owner" kept her tied outside 24/7. His good friend would beg him to bring her in, but he would not. She was terrified in the storms. When the "owner" suddenly passed away, the friend contacted us and we took her into rescue, and Karen adopted her. Mya had some issues upon adoption, but Karen worked with her and accepted her and loved her. Mya had a wonderful last 5 years to life, and here are some photos. She loved riding on the boat--she really was a happy girl!"

“The Rainbow Bridge is a meadow where animals wait for their humans to join them, and the bridge that takes them all to heaven, together.” - Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary 🐾 There’s a reason we took a picture every single day: when you have a senior dog, every day is a gift. He was a best friend, a protector, a therapist, a comedian - and we wanted to record every second we had so that we could one day look back on our time with him. Say what you will about social media, but Instagram gave us a place to share and save our memories of this precious baby. You don’t know how important pictures are until they’re all you have left. 🐾 Rescue dogs are special. They come and go in and out of multiple people’s lives. We like to think of them as guardian angels; they come into your life for a reason and leave when their work is done. Cecil was a guardian angel for so many; we were his last stop. 🐾 Cecil was spoiled, adored, absolutely cherished for each day that we had with him. We built our whole day around his walks, his car rides, his meals, his snuggle time, his play time. We’re grieving now, but the best thing we can do to honor his legacy is to keep loving senior dogs. They deserve all the devotion that younger pups get; they’re still unique souls with so much love to give. 🐾 If you would like to honor Cecil, please consider donating to the Pound Pals of Radford in his name. They helped him find us; they changed our lives. We’d love if you’d help them change other lives, too. 🐾 Love, Karlee, Billy, and, our guardian angel, Cecil👼🏻
I just wanted to write and let you all know that we helped Roxy cross the rainbow bridge on 5/21. Last year she has a mass on her spleen, a splenectomy and the biopsy came back benign. Unfortunately, we learned in March of this year that she had 3 tumors on her liver and the biopsy of the tumors showed it was some type of Sarcoma. She was doing great up until that Friday the 21st, when we took her to the vet she had an active bleed in her abdomen. That is when we made the very hard decision to not let her suffer. She was an amazing dog, so caring and we greatly miss her!!😢😢😢 Adopted December 24th 2009
Happy 5th Gotcha Day to Mayzie! She is happy, healthy, and the Queen of the house. Thank you, Pound Pals of Radford for the opportunity to be her mama!
This is a 6-month update on Cecil (a.k.a. Good King Cecilslaus, Monsieur Wigglebutt, Mr. Baby, Mad Lad)! We are happy to report that, with vet guidance: 1. Cecil's allergies have improved with a stronger allergy medication, the use of a Levoit pet-specific air purifier, some Zesty Paws senior-specific aller-immune bites, and sleeping with a soft cone each night, which has staved off the chronic paw-licking. 2. His arthritis is doing well with a new prescription. 3. He is off his super strong pain med and instead uses CBD shampoo in addition to his medicated shampoo! 4. His hot spots have healed and his coat is thick, soft, and shiny 🙂 His fur is even growing back on his old man elbows! A deshedding brush has kept his coat healthy and clean, plus monthly baths with nail trimmings and ear cleanings. 5. His daily schedule consists of three 10-minute daily walks, four smaller meals throughout the day at 1 cup each, and treats of healthy snacks like apples, bananas, carrots, and sweet potatoes! 6. We've noticed that he is now able to run around in the yard. This is great for a gent his age and we are so pleased he still has all this energy! 7. Cecil recently got over a bout of aspirational pneumonia from throwing up. We, at first, thought the vomiting was just allergies or perhaps normal upset tummy. After seeking a second opinion Cecil has, unfortunately, been diagnosed with Megaesophagus, which is a spontaneous condition that is common is older, larger dogs. This means his esophagus is loose, large, and filled with air, making it hard for his food to get to his stomach and resulting in regurgitation. It’s usually congenital, but could also be the result of earlier toxin exposure, trauma, or illness. We’re not sure how long he’s had it or what caused/what’s causing it, but we’re having our vet run tests to possibly find an underlying cause. It’s incurable, but manageable with the right treatments. These treatments include vertical feeding using an elevated food dish (his hips are a little too old for the “Bailey chair” - worth the Google!), gastritis medication, and a watchful eye for complications such as chronic aspirational pneumonia (it’s treatable with antibiotics, as long as the bouts are infrequent). It’s extra work, but we have the time and willpower to maintain Cecil’s good quality of life for as long as possible, no matter if that’s 2 months or 2 years. We just wanted to update you all on how he’s doing so no negative developments (if and when they occur) will come as a shock in the next few weeks, months, or years. Every day is a gift and Cecil has had and will continue to have a wonderful run of gifts for as long as he accepts them! Besides his health, Cecil's favorite part of his day is his daily car ride to the horse farm for his third daily walk. There's lots to sniff there! His favorite toy is his XL KONG dog bone that his grandma bought him. His favorite place to sleep is the armchair, but he's taken to sleeping on his PupRug orthopedic bed next to our bed each night. His favorite treats remain the dog cookies from Blacksburg Bagels and he looks forward to seeing them at the farmer's market each week! His best friend is the hound next door, Harold, and they have regular play dates in our yard. The kids in our neighborhood ADORE Cecil and look forward to rainy days because they get to see Cecil in his yellow raincoat, which is their favorite outfit of his. Cecil, for his part, loves the attention. Six months in, we couldn't be happier with our decision to adopt a senior dog. Yes, he may have some old man needs, but, one day, we all will! These needs are just part of the commitment to caring for man’s best friend from puppyhood through “crossing the rainbow bridge”. Our reason for adopting Cecil was to give him the most peaceful golden years we could and can, no matter the effort. Seniors are the best, and Cecil is the best of the best, no matter the realities of old age. We wanted to provide this update because we know a lot of people care about Cecil; he has touched so many lives in so many ways in his roughly 13 years and we wanted to be sure to keep everyone updated! If you want, you can get daily updates on his life and his health on Instagram, @cecilthehokie!
Crystal’s 15th Birthday! Aka Lulu, Gotcha Day - 2/5/07
This cutie is “Sal”. I saw his pic last year with Radford Pound Pals as a feral kitten that would be TNR at the back of a restaurant. Being a sucker for “pointed” felines I asked if I could try to tame him knowing he was past the usual age of taming. So after vetting I picked him up and brought him home. I put him in a cage since I couldn’t just turn him loose. For about a month he hissed and spit whenever I came near him tho I refused to not put my hand in his cage. He swatted at me but never hurt me. One day I saw him head butt the cage door. Aha! He was capable of being tame. Then he was head butting my hand. Then allowing head rubs. After awhile he let me pick him up. This is him last night laying on my nightstand while I read before bedtime. Take a chance on a feral you never know what could happen with some TLC. Thanks, Karen
Anyone remembers this bunch. We adopted the two in the middle column in 2007. They are still with us. Would love to hear from the owners of the others to see how they are.
Shout out to all the folks at Pound Pals ... My name is Ruben and back in May 2007 when I was just a year old you saved me and sent me to NH to find a new forever home ... (my name was Walt) ... I thought you might like to know that I am still going strong and want to thank everyone in rescue who makes success stories just like me possible!
Cooper former “kato” living his best life 💚
My partner Billy and I just adopted sweet Cecil this past weekend. He has taken to our little family like a duck to water. We all have fallen into our routine, filled with lots of snuggles, walks, and toys. We can’t thank Karen and the rest of the Pound Pals of Radford enough for bringing this amazing little (not so little? 😂) soul into our lives. He will be absolutely cherished for the rest of his days! You can follow those days on Instagram, where we post one photo a day of his adventures @cecilthehokie, if you’re interested 🙂 Thank you all so much; you are making a difference in so many human and animal lives!
Our lovable pup and alum of Pound Pals of Radford, Chester, crossed the Rainbow Bridge today. His mom,“Roxie”, and all of his siblings (Chloe, Champ, Claire, etc) were all adopted from Pound Pals of Radford. Included in this post is a reunion picture from 2010 of Chester, his mom “Roxie”, and a few of his siblings. He will surely be missed! He was the best dog a family could ever wish for.
