All of our buildings are climate controlled, and when dogs head outside for potty breaks, they can splash around in kiddie pools filled with cool water. 💦🐶

Fitz wrapped up his Day Training program right here at PetU Racine—and the progress speaks for itself! 🐾🎓

One of his biggest challenges was barrier reactivity—barking, jumping, and heightened arousal when in a kennel or crate. Through consistent counterconditioning and support from his trainer, Marissa, Fitz learned to stay calm and composed, even in the same situations that once overwhelmed him.

This before-and-after video highlights just how far he’s come over his 6-session program—and we couldn’t be prouder of his hard work!

📚🐶 Learning to speak dog!

During our Pupils & Paws: Kids Canine Safety class, Abbie—our head trainer—kicked things off by teaching our young participants all about dog communication!

Using an engaging presentation, Abbie covered how dogs use body language to show how they’re feeling, how to read those cues, and how to respond safely and respectfully. 🐾

Later in class, the kids had fun with a game of dog language charades before seeing real-life dog behavior in action! This is just the beginning of many valuable lessons they’ll explore during the 4-week course. ❤️🐕

From dog handling and training to client support and facility leadership, Marissa has been with our Racine team since 2017 and brings care, compassion, and experience to everything she does. If your pup has worked with her, you already know the difference she makes!

🐾 Meet Marissa – PetU Racine’s Store Manager & Board and Train Specialist! 🐶💼

Say hello to Marissa, the friendly face leading the charge at PetU Racine! Marissa joined the PetU team in 2017 and brings over a decade of hands-on experience in animal care, training, and facility leadership.

Her journey in pet care started back in 2014 as a kennel technician, followed by years of volunteer work and pet sitting. After starting as a dog handler at PetU Racine in 2017, she became a core part of our board and train program—working closely with our head trainer and eventually leading most of the program’s hands-on work by 2019.

By 2020, she was adding front desk responsibilities to her role, and in May 2023, she stepped into her current position as Store Manager. Today, she still wears many hats—leading the Racine team, guiding clients, and helping dogs build confidence and long-term success through structured training.

Marissa is also an AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Evaluator, allowing her to officially assess and certify dogs who meet AKC’s standards for good behavior in the community. Her proudest moments come from helping dogs gain confidence and thrive in their home lives.

🐾 Meet Abbie – PetU’s General Manager & Head Trainer! 🎓🐶

Say hello to Abbie, our incredible General Manager and Head Trainer here at PetU! She’s been part of the PetU family since 2016 and plays a vital role in nearly every part of what we do — from training and behavior support to leadership and client care.

Her journey in pet care started back in high school, when she worked her first job at a dog daycare at just 17. Since then, she’s built an impressive background in dog handling, training, and facility leadership — and today, she helps guide PetU with knowledge, heart, and a passion for continued growth.

Abbie holds certifications in:
📚 Pet CPR & First Aid
🧠 Behavioral Neuroscience for Dog Trainers (APDT)
🏅 AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator

She’s also a proud member of the International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP) and the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT) — and volunteers on the IACP Certification Committee, helping raise the bar for industry standards.

Her education includes hands-on training and workshops with top names like Michael Shikashio, Chad Mackin, Marc Goldberg, Mark McCabe, and Nelson Hodges — focusing on reactivity, fear, aggression, and resource guarding.

Abbie’s training approach is built on compassion, patience, and adaptability. With a strong interest in psychology, she believes in training the dog in front of her — using thoughtful methods that support each dog’s unique personality and needs.
