Are zebras strong enough to ride? YES ✔️
Are zebras difficult? YES ✔️
So why don't people ride zebras?
It's not because they aren't strong enough. It's because they don't want to work. They have the attention span of a toddler, the anxiety of prey animals, and a trust circle about the size of a pea... divided into fourths. 😂
A zebra's skeletal structure is a little different from a horse's, but not enough to prevent riding. The real challenge is their mind and their conformation. They have very little wither, so staying on feels like riding a rocket-powered barrel making 90° turns at Mach 5. They're short, powerful, incredibly athletic, and convinced everything around them deserves their attention.
Can a zebra kick kill a lion? YES ✔️
(So can your horse.)
What are zebras good for?
In Africa... avoiding becoming lion food.
In the United States, they mostly worry about one thing: when their owners are bringing dinner. 🦓
Zebras are incredibly self-sufficient. In many ways they're more comparable to donkeys than horses, and today many are simply enjoyed as pasture companions.
At ZebrasRus, we've worked with all kinds of zebras, and one thing has become very clear: how they're raised leaves a lifelong impression. Through selective breeding, positive handling, and consistency, we're seeing calmer, more people-oriented offspring. Some of our zebras ride, some drive, and a few have become full-time therapists and ambassadors.
You truly get back what you pour into them.
They also have memories that remind me of cats. One day they'll give you the world, and the next they'll act like they've never met you. But when you're in their trusted circle, the bond is something special.
Time. Dedication. Patience. Understanding.
Those things can accomplish incredible things.
Today I walked out into the pasture and climbed on my Grevy's zebra stallion, Marley.
Not for sale. We wouldn't take $90,000 for him.
Some zebras simply aren't replaceable. The years of trust, training, and partnership that create a truly exceptional zebra are priceless.
