A local rescuer gave this bad info to someone with a cat that has ringworm. A 'respected' rescuer. Please do not blindly trust rescuers, there is a lot of bad info and wive's tales taken as gospel truth in rescue.
Ringworm is a fungus, from the same family as foot fungus.
It can, and should be treated with lime sulfur dips as first line treatment. It can be treated with clotrimazole lotion (brand name Lotrimin in the athlete's foot section). Miconazole nitrate 2% (Monistat) can be used, but will make cats puke if they lick it. Oral medications, such as Itrafungol, can be used if the vet prescribes it. Always go to the vet first, before treating so they can make sure it's ringworm.
Cats, dogs, humans...anything that can contract it DOES NOT become immune to ringworm. It's a fungus. Not a virus. You can reinfect yourself, animals can be reinfected once treated. It is a pain in the ass fungus to treat and once in your home, hard to fully eradicate.
Healthy adult cats are less likely to contract it, and it can self resolve, but that takes months and is contagious the whole time. Kittens, sick cats, and older cats are more susceptible to it.
If you suspect a cat has it, and you dont know what to do, go to your vet and they can help you get a treatment plan going. Google how to wash bedding or blankets and what cleaners can kill ringworm to keep your home as clean as possible.
Dont blindly accept what you are told. Another rescuer told someone to use coconut oil on ringworm. 🤦🏼♀️ (Apparently coconut oil may have some properties that help against it, but I wouldnt use it personally. So see, even I dont know everything lol)
When in doubt, contact your vet. They can usually give some info over the phone and help you decide if you need to bring the cat in.
Edit: all medications I listed have been directly prescribed by vets for cats with ringworm. I directly dealt with those cats and the medicines.
