Huckleberry is such a little show horse! This week he learned how to rollover and the level of cuteness is off the charts!! ๐
Tokyo working hard on going to his bed on cue, he's doing great!
My little old man still knows stuff! ๐ These are just a few of the many behaviors I had to teach him when I was going through the Karen Pryor Academy back in 2014, Quincy also attended and participated in the KPA with me. He loves doing his "bow" behavior, it makes him feel sophisticated ๐
I've been having to do a little at home training with my own dog, Quincy.
I took in a baby Quail I found and have been keeping him in my shower for the last 1.5 weeks. Everything was fine with those living arrangements, Cadbury was happy and so was Quincy.
I made Cadbury a bigger house and have slowly been introducing it to him while he's still staying in the shower. This changed everything for Quincy, he was stressed about this change in environment. He will whine and pace around the new house when Cadbury is in it and struggles to settle.
I've been working on building calm behaviors with Quincy around the new Quail house when Cadbury is in it. Cadbury is a little stressed too trying to get situated in his big boy house which Quincy most definitely feeds off of. Thankfully Quincy is starting to settle down and relax and is even leaving the room to go lay down but if Quincy walks away or I walk away, Cadbury is a very upset Quail!
I'm confident everything will be alright and everyone can coexist peacefully but it's been a very busy week and a half with our new family addition! ๐ฅ

Ranger is doing so well with his leash training, I think he had the lightbulb moment of what makes the walks continue and what makes snacks happen for him!

Ohhhhh Otis! Otis is a huge fan of leash biting and playing tug with his leash while out on walks. He also enjoys taking off at full speed on his leash and taking you for a ride!
Well his parents don't love the same games that Otis does and asked if I could work on his leash skills during the #whileyoureouttraining program.
Here's a quick before and after video from his first day of training. He's such a funny dog with a big personality! ๐
The top video is what Abner's parents have been experiencing with him every day on walks- so much pulling in every direction, jumping, and some excited spins.
The bottom video is still the first day only after 20 minutes of training. It's definitely not perfect but we're moving in the right direction, I'm proud of him and happy with his progress! Taming his excitement for walks and teaching him what we would like him to do all through using positive reinforcement training methods. No shock, force, or intimidation tactics used ever.
Huckleberry had the light bulb moment for his down behavior today! ๐ก
Frenchies are typically pretty awkward in teaching a lie down behavior, think of a teeter- totter... When the head goes down the buns come up! ๐ He used to give zero interest in learning to lie down but this week he's made great progress! He is such a fun dog to work and gives so much effort in his training sessions!
Next step is to phase off the food lure, I'm sure he'll be miffed about that part but I know he can do it!
I love getting dogs off prong collars and actually teaching them how to walk nicely on a leash!
Diya's parents didn't enjoy having their dog on a prong collar but they didn't know where to start in getting her to not drag them around the neighborhood (she's a 120 pound Beauceron). This is where I happily come in and guide the dog and their humans to their dog training goals!
Here she is after 2 sessions of her While You're Out Training Program, walking nicely on the leash as well as offering me attention. ๐
Raya working very hard on an out of sight stay and holding the behavior while I open the front door! Good girl!

Frankie is a such a little show horse and I'm loving it! This little lady is one motivated learner and picks up everything I throw at her! ๐

Huckleberry working hard during his While You're Out Training Program! ๐ This little fella has a medical condition that requires him to wear diapers due to not having control over his bladder and bowels. His parents wanted some help on making the every day caregiver tasks easier for all involved. Hucky is a bit of a busy body and he doesn't slow down for diaper changing time, you have to keep up with him! I've been working with him on a stand and stay with duration behavior to make diaper changing a smoother process.
His mom noted that he's staying in place longer to get the diapers on and his jumping has noticably reduced! ๐
Keep up the good work Huckleberry!

You can teach your dog how to be helpful around the house!
Dog training is limitless as long as we're asking our dogs to do behaviors that they're physically capable of doing!

Mental Stimulation! ๐ก
Another favorite mental stimulation toy is the Orbee Tuff Snoop. Quincy loves this toy and I'm not going to lie, it's super cute watching dogs play with this one! If you feed your dog kibble, this is a fun puzzle to feed your dog a portion of his or her meal out of. Quincy is fed raw so he just gets snacks in this toy. Anything that makes your dog think is mental stimulation!
Mental stimulation is incredibly beneficial for dogs and helps reduce energy, boredom, frustration, reduces destruction, and can help to lower stress. Mental stimulation puzzles gives your dog an appropriate outlet to direct pent up energy out on. Though dogs need a good combination of physical and mental outlets, mental stimulation is more tiring for a dog than physical stimulation!
Quincy's showing off his skills walking essentially off leash in our neighborhood for tonight's walk!
Please note, it takes a lot of training time to get to off leash walks in public settings and isn't something I would casually try your dog out doing. I trust Quincy doing this behavior in our neighborhood where there's very little traffic and he's learned he needs to stay on the inside and away from the street. I would NEVER test this behavior or ever suggest doing this in busy areas. No training is ever worth an injury to a dog or the possibility of death, safety first!
Volume up ๐๐ด
Sorry guys, I can't work. I have to hold Quincy's head up while he slumbers ๐คฃ
It's 102ยฐ out right now, he's enjoying his frozen lickmat and plucking off the frozen blueberries ๐ฆ๐ซ

Baxter working on his leash training from earlier in the week during his While You're Out Training, he's doing great! Baxter is a Basset Hound and his nose can get him carried away quickly. This means he would take off on the leash for a scent, pull with every ounce of muscle for a scent, or he refused to leave a scent and would get fixated.
I've been working a lot on leash training in general, but also working with him on giving attention to the handler. I am using his love of sniffing as a form of reward as well as treats. If he's keeping slack in the leash then he gets to sniff his little heart out or get a treat. Remember, we always want to give dogs the opportunity to smell things along their walks but we don't want to reinforce any leash pulling by allowing them to yank us around on their leash for a scent!
Baxter is learning to keep his nose off the ground a bit more so that he's not constantly trailing a scent, keeping slack in the leash so that he can get all the sniff rewards, and also giving the handler more attention than the distracting environment!

Let's talk about reinforcers!
A lot of people think the reward has to be food, it doesn't! Yes, most dogs are more food driven than anything and that's fine! If your dog enjoys play time like Coltrane loves to play fetch, use that as a form of reward! For Coltrane he loves to play ball, I use a mixture of food rewards and tossing the ball for his rewards.
Whatever your dog enjoys can be used as a reward, you just have to figure out where each motivator sits on the "pay scale" for the dog. What really gets the dogs attention or high value and what's pretty low on the scale. Remember, the harder the behavior requires a bigger payout for the dog!
Just a ball of fur learning how to roll over ๐
Just getting some training time in with Quincy today. This 11.5 year old LOVES anything and everything to do with training and that couldn't make me happier. Tonight him and I were reviewing some leave it/ impulse control behaviors, leaving the treats with me out of sight and not near the food. For not practicing this behavior in months, he did great! ๐
Check out this solid "stay" ๐
Raya is making great progress during her While You're Out Training Program! She is doing so well with many of her behaviors but this stay behavior is hard!!
For the dog to stay in place, turn your back and walk away, walk away out of sight, then open and close the door, and walk back is a lot of impulse control for a dog! Good girl!
