Here are a few pictures of the building process from a burrow that I did this morning.
1. Find the spot where you want the burrow and clear the top soil. Soil was set aside to use at the end.
2. Dig a trench the width and length of the tube. You can see that I dig the back of the hole deeper so I can add the bricks so the tortoise won’t continue to burrow deeper.
3. Add some clean screened dirt on top of the bricks. The tortoise needs dirt to be able to burrow around in but I always make sure they can’t continue to dig down or back any more.
4. Drop the tube into the trench. The end front end needs to be level or above the ground. The tube slopes down into the back of the trench.
5. Put down a tarp to help prevent rain water from seeping into the burrow. This part is optional. I had a bad experience with one of my burrows in the past so I do this to all burrows that I build now just to be safe.
6. This is optional as well but I like to use rocks to build up around to entrance to make it look more like a natural cave. There’s really no practical reason for it other than making it look nicer.
7. Add a BUNCH of dirt! For a Sonoran Desert Tortoise I usually use approximately 2,000lbs of screened fill dirt on top of the tube. More dirt means more insulation from the hot or cold temperatures.
8. Take the top soil that I set aside earlier and spread it on top to make the burrow fit in with the surrounding soil.
Burrow complete! Total time building this burrow was approximately 2.5 hours. There really isn’t a correct way to build a burrow. There are so many different methods that work just fine. I just wanted to share the design that I have tested and successfully used for years now. If you have any questions, need advice, want to buy a tube, or need a burrow built, just send me a message and I’ll be happy to help!
