Hi, I’m Flaco, and I’m looking for my forever home... again.
My name is Flaco, and I’m a handsome, approximately 2-year-old Belgian Malinois mix with a heart that’s every bit as big as my ears. Life hasn’t always gone exactly as planned for me, but I’m hoping my next chapter will be the one that lasts forever.
Just over a year ago, my brother and I were found wandering the streets of Yuma as strays. Nobody came looking for us, and we weren’t sure what the future would hold. Thankfully, we were rescued by the wonderful people at Central Arizona Animal Rescue. They gave us safety, food, love, and a chance to find families of our own. Before long, both my brother and I were adopted, and it seemed like our happy ending had arrived.
Recently, though, I found myself back at the rescue.
My family welcomed a new baby, and as their lives became busier, they decided they no longer had enough time for me. While it was hard to lose my home, everyone at the rescue has reminded me that this isn't the end of my story. It’s simply a detour on the road to finding the family that’s truly meant for me.
If there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I absolutely love people. Whether we're going for a walk, hanging out in the yard, watching television, or just relaxing together, I’m happiest when I’m near my humans. I’m not looking for anything extravagant. Honestly, I just want to be part of your life.
I also enjoy the company of other dogs. I get along well with little dogs and dogs my own size, and I love having canine friends to spend time with. If your home already has a dog looking for a buddy, there’s a good chance we could become best friends. As for cats, my rescue friends just haven’t had the opportunity to test me with them yet, so that remains a mystery.
I’m told I’m house-trained, which means I understand that outside is the place to take care of business. I also know some commands and have already learned some good manners. Like many young dogs, I would love continued training and guidance. The good news is that I’m smart and eager to learn.
Speaking of smart, let’s talk a little about my breed. Belgian Malinois are known for their intelligence, loyalty, athleticism, and strong bonds with their people. We are often chosen for police work, search-and-rescue, service work, and other demanding jobs because we love having a purpose and enjoy learning new things. While I certainly have that classic Malinois intelligence, I’m also an incredibly sweet and social guy who simply enjoys being around people and canine companions. I would thrive with an active family that can include me in daily adventures, give me exercise, and continue helping me be the very best dog I can be.
What I’m really searching for is someone who won’t see me as a temporary part of their life. I want a family that understands dogs are forever. A family that will celebrate the good times, help me through the challenges, and let me spend every day knowing I belong.
I’ve already been through being lost once. I’ve already experienced coming back to rescue through no fault of my own. Now I’m ready for the happy ending I’ve been dreaming about.

I’m Kurt, and if you’re reading this, I’m hoping it means my forever family might finally be out there. I’m about three years old, around 25 pounds, and—if you ask the humans at Central Arizona Animal Rescue—some kind of Shiba Inu mix… though honestly, your guess is as good as anyone’s. What I do know is that I’m a good boy with a big heart, a gentle spirit, and a story that’s ready for a new chapter.
I didn’t come here alone. I arrived at a California pound with my whole family—my mate and our four pups, all around two years old now. We were one big pack who had lived our whole lives together. We were friendly, social, and sweet, but we didn’t know much about the world. Our previous owners must have gotten overwhelmed, because even though they clearly cared about us, we never learned things like how to walk on a leash or what “sit” means. I’m still figuring out how to be a dog in a human world, but I’m trying hard, and I’m proud of how far I’ve already come.
Life at Central Arizona Animal Rescue has been a huge change, but a good one. The people here are kind, patient, and always cheering me on. They say I’m gentle, quiet, and easy to love. I don’t bark much, and I warm up quickly once I know you’re safe. I’m curious about everything—grass under my paws, toys, treats, the sound of a leash clipping on. Every day I learn something new, and every day I get a little braver.
I’m not sure if I’ve ever lived inside a house before, so things like couches, TVs, and vacuum cleaners might be new to me. I don’t know how I feel about cats or small children yet, but I do know I love people who move slowly, speak kindly, and give me time to understand what’s happening. I’m not a high-energy dog; I’m more of a soft, steady companion who wants to be near you, learn from you, and trust you.
The rescue has taken great care of me. I’ve been neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, so I’m ready to start my new life the moment the right person walks through the door. I dream about that moment a lot—someone kneeling down, offering a hand, and saying, “Hey, Kurt… let’s go home.”
Maybe that someone is you.
I may not know many commands yet, and I may need a little patience as I learn how to live in a home, but I promise I’ll give you something even better in return: loyalty, gratitude, and a heart that’s been waiting a long time to belong to someone.

Hi there, future family! My name is Lafonda, and oh boy, do I have a tail‑wagging story to tell you. I’ve been waiting a long time to share it with the special humans who will someday call me their own. Maybe—just maybe—that’s you.
I’m about four years old, which means I’ve got the perfect mix of youthful pep and grown‑up charm. Back in June of 2025, I was picked up as a stray in Yuma. I don’t remember much about how I ended up on my own, but I do remember how relieved I was when kind people scooped me up and kept me safe. I spent some time at the pound there, dreaming of the day someone would walk in, point at me, and say, “That’s the one.” It didn’t happen then… but that’s okay, because my journey wasn’t over.
Now I’m living my best temporary life at Central Arizona Animal Rescue, and let me tell you—I’m soaking up all the love, treats, and playtime I can get. Still, every night when I curl up to sleep, I imagine what it will feel like to finally have a forever home. A place where I can stretch out on a soft bed, chase toys across the yard, and follow my humans around like the loyal shadow I’m destined to be.
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room—or rather, the bald spot on my head. Yep, I’ve got one! When I was found, I had a wound there, but it’s all healed up now. The hair just never grew back, so I rock a permanent little shiny patch. Personally, I think it adds character. Some dogs have fancy markings; I have a built‑in conversation starter. It makes me unique, memorable, and honestly kind of adorable.
I’m all up to date on my vaccinations, and I’ve been microchipped so I’ll never get lost again. That part is really important to me. After spending who‑knows‑how‑long wandering alone, the idea of always being connected to my people feels like the warmest, safest hug.
Now, let’s get to the fun stuff—my personality. If you’re looking for a couch potato, I’m probably not your girl. I’m an active, playful, goofy, boxer‑mix bundle of energy. I love to run, jump, wiggle, and especially play fetch. Oh, fetch. My absolute favorite. Throw the ball once, and I’ll think you’re neat. Throw it twice, and I’ll think you’re amazing. Throw it three times, and I’ll love you forever.
I adore people. Hanging out with humans is one of my top hobbies. Whether you’re relaxing, working in the yard, or just wandering around the house, I’m happiest when I’m part of the action. I’m loyal, affectionate, and always ready to brighten your day with a tail wag or a goofy grin.
I do need to mention one thing: I’m not good with cats. I know, I know—they’re cute and fluffy, but something about them just gets me too excited. So a cat‑free home would be best for everyone involved.

Meet Lucky – A Sweet Young Girl Looking for Her Forever Home
Hello! My name is Lucky, and even though life hasn't always gone according to plan, I'm hoping my luck is about to change. Maybe that change starts with you!
I'm about 1 year old, and I'm a happy, healthy girl who is already vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed. That means I'm ready to pack my bags and move right into my forever home.
Nobody knows exactly how my story began. I was picked up as a stray by animal control in Yuma, and sadly, no one ever came looking for me. While my past remains a mystery, I'm focusing on my future—and I'm hoping it's with a family who will love me, protect me, and give me the happy ending I've been dreaming about.
Right now, I'm staying at Central Arizona Animal Rescue, where everyone has been very kind to me. When I first arrived, I was a little shy and scared. Everything was new, and I wasn't quite sure who I could trust. But with some patience, love, and encouragement, I've started to come out of my shell.
One thing that really helped me was meeting a special dog friend here. You could even call him my boyfriend! He's shown me that people can be kind and that life doesn't have to be scary. We get along wonderfully, and thanks to his confidence and friendship, I've become much more comfortable and relaxed. Now I enjoy attention, making new friends, and exploring the world around me.
The people here think I might be an Anatolian Shepherd mix. If you're not familiar with Anatolian Shepherds, they're known for being intelligent, loyal, protective, and devoted to their families. Originally bred to guard livestock, Anatolians are independent thinkers with a calm and steady nature. They form strong bonds with their people and are known for watching over those they love. While I seem to have many of those wonderful traits, I'm actually a bit smaller than a purebred Anatolian Shepherd, making me a more manageable size for many families.
Like many young dogs, I still have plenty of energy and curiosity. At only a year old, I have my whole life ahead of me. I'd love a family that will continue helping me build confidence, teach me new things, and include me in their daily adventures. Whether we're going for walks, relaxing in the backyard, or spending quiet evenings together, I'll be happiest simply being part of a family.
Because I've had a rough start, I may need a little patience while I adjust to a new environment. But if you give me time, I promise I'll reward you with loyalty, companionship, and lots of love. Every day I become more confident, and everyone here believes I have the potential to become an amazing family dog.
I don't think my forever home needs to be perfect. It just needs to be filled with kindness, understanding, and people who will never give up on me. In return, I'll give you my heart.

Meet Max: A Survivor Looking for His Forever Home
Hello, my name is Max, and I'm a handsome male Belgian Malinois looking for a second chance at the life every dog deserves. I may not come with a perfect past, but I come with a big heart, a resilient spirit, and a lot of love to give the right person.
My story didn't start out easy.
I once lived in a trailer with my owner, my brother Taylon, and our two sisters. One day, our owner was unexpectedly picked up and deported. He wasn't given the opportunity to tell anyone that we were still inside the trailer. For more than a week, we were left alone without food or water, waiting for help that didn't come soon enough.
Eventually, our owner was able to make a phone call and let someone know about us. Animal Control was finally notified and came to rescue us. But by the time they arrived, our two sisters had already passed away. Only Taylon and I survived.
It's something no dog should ever have to go through.
When I was taken to the pound, I was in rough shape physically and emotionally. I had learned that the world could be scary, and I wasn't sure who I could trust. I became very suspicious of people, especially strangers. The humans caring for me now understood that healing takes time, patience, and kindness. They never gave up on me, and little by little I've started to learn that not every hand reaches out to hurt or abandon.
Today, I'm doing so much better.
Once I get to know you, I'm a sweet and affectionate guy. I absolutely love a good butt scratch and tummy rub from the people I trust. If you're looking for a dog who appreciates the simple things in life, you'll fit right in with me. Want to know the quickest way to become my friend? Bring a hot dog! I am a huge fan and will happily tell you all about it with my wagging tail.
I've also been sharing my kennel with a female German Shepherd, and we get along great. Having a canine companion around has helped me build confidence and reminds me that life can still be good. Because of my history, we aren't sure how I would do with small dogs or cats, so any introductions to other pets would need to be handled carefully and thoughtfully.
I've found that I tend to be more comfortable around men than women, although I continue to make progress every day. What I really need is someone who understands that trust is earned and that some of us survivors need a little extra time before we fully open our hearts.
The good news is that I'm ready for my next chapter. I'm current on all my vaccinations, neutered, and microchipped. All the important vet work has been done. Now the only thing missing is a family of my own.
I dream about having a safe place to call home. A place where I never have to wonder where my next meal is coming from. A place where I can relax, enjoy belly rubs, chase toys, eat the occasional hot dog, and spend my days with someone who sees not just where I've been, but where I'm going.
I am not looking for pity. I am looking for a partner, a best friend, and a forever family.

What Are “Scaredy Cat Dogs?
A Special Group of Dogs Who Deserve a Special Kind of Person
At Central Arizona Animal Rescue, we care for all kinds of dogs—but some of the ones who need us most are what we lovingly call our scaredy cat dogs. This nickname doesn’t mean they’re bad, broken, or hopeless. It simply means they grew up without the human contact and guidance puppies need, so trusting people doesn’t come naturally to them. These dogs weren’t raised in homes, they weren’t taught that people can be kind, and they didn’t learn basic puppy skills like leash walking or meeting new humans confidently.
Because of that, they’re cautious. They’re unsure. And they need someone willing to look past their fear and see the wonderful dog underneath.
Why They’re Special
Every scaredy cat dog at our rescue has been with us for a long time. Over time, they’ve learned to trust a small handful of staff members—people they see every day, who bring them treats (hot dogs are a BIG hit), speak gently, and show them patience. Once these dogs bond with someone, that bond is deep, loyal, and incredibly meaningful. They just need the chance to build that same trust with a forever family.
What They Need
Because they missed out on early training, most of these dogs have never learned how to walk on a leash. They’ll need patience, consistency, and a calm environment while they learn. The good news is: we have trainers here at the rescue who will teach YOU how to teach THEM, so you’re never doing this alone.
We do recommend that these dogs not go to homes with very small children—fast movements and unpredictable noise can be overwhelming for dogs who are already unsure of people.
Why You Haven’t Seen Them at Adoption Events
Our scaredy cat dogs don’t attend adoption events. They’re simply too frightened in busy, unfamiliar environments. That means they don’t get the same exposure as our more confident dogs, and very few people ever get the chance to meet them. When visitors do come to see them, they often don’t “present” well—they hide, they freeze, or they avoid eye contact. But that’s just fear talking, not their true personality.
Great With Other Dogs
One thing these pups are confident about is other dogs. They’re almost always wonderful with canine companions, and we strongly recommend they go to a home with another friendly dog. A confident dog can show them the ropes, help them feel safe, and teach them that people aren’t so scary after all. They make excellent buddies for lonely dogs who need a companion.

To help set these dogs—and you—up for success, we offer a very reduced adoption rate for our scaredy cat dogs. We also send you home with everything you need to start this journey:

Hi there!
My name’s Nick—yes, like “Saint Nick,” though I am more tail wags than toy bags. I am about 20-25 pounds of love, fluff, and mystery lineage. Think labrador charm with the build of a corgi on casual Friday. Me and my brother Skipper were recently surrendered to the pound by our previous owner. The people here at Central Arizona Animal Rescue do not know why they did that to us. I am learning how to get along without my brother and to tell the truth, it is a little scary without him, but if I am ever going to find a cozy corner in someone's heart to call my own I will need to do that by myself.
Here is the thing: I did not grow up around many people, so I am what they call “a little shy.” But give me a minute (and maybe a piece of cheese?), and I will be following you around like we have been besties since belly rubs were invented. Cameras freak me out—I know, I know, I am cute, but I prefer to be admired in real life rather so I made it hard for the folks here to get really great photos of me.
A few facts about me:
I am neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped—basically ready for a lifetime commitment
I get along well with other dogs so if you have another dog that would be awesome!
House-trained? Probably but I might need a little refresher training when I get to my new home.
You might ask, what about cats? Well, that is unknown territory, but I am open to negotiations. My previous owners did not leave any clues and there are none here at the rescue to really be able to find out with.
If you have got patience, a comfy couch, and a pocket full of treats, I have got love, loyalty, and some very expressive ears to offer.
