Exciting install today!
Sorry… this is a novel… I enjoy telling a good story…
Imagine if we had the chance to install a fence for a twin…
…and the other side of the twin already had a fence from another company…
That company installed their wire all the way through the house…
Allowing the dog access to every inch of their property!
The customer wanted exactly what her neighbor had, but, she did not want the same company to do it. (they had been there)
I wanted the job.
I bid the job.
No possibility for a double back loop since she wanted it done like it was for the “other side”.
Ok.
No possibility for open end loop either.
No option for signal field inside the house, because the dog has full access to the whole house.
🤔
Sure.
I’ll do it… and I’ll do it better than they did.
Fortunately I work with Pet Stop.
Burying the wire in the yard was easy enough.
Buried the wire seven inches deep…
However, passing the wire completely through a FINISHED basement was very tricky to say the least.
I worked on the inside, while my beautiful wife Amanda and our master installer, Sean, worked the outside and driveway cuts.
We mounted the transmitter on the garage back wall.
Ran the loop wire up high on the side wall but not too high lest we get signal into the bedroom above…tricky.
Then we drilled on an angle to a hole between the driveway and the wall of the garage… tricky. (The other company used a pvc pipe that was visible and unsightly.)
Next, I drilled a hole through the right side of the stairwell wall at the exact point the wire needed to go to prevent signal triggering the collar when the dog went down the stairs… super tricky! (I used a flag with one end pounded flat with a hammer). The hole ended up being slightly larger than the flag stem. It was just large enough to pass white 20ga wire right through to the transmitter mounting spot. (I had promised the customer that I would be discreet inside her finished home.)
Next, I drilled the left side of the stairwell, making sure the signal field did not pe*****te the landings above.
The rest to the finished basement had drop ceiling so I used a fiberglass rod to leap over the box grid so the wire layed on the top of the tiles. Finally reaching the opposite side of the basement, I dropped the rod straight down behind the drywall in the corner.
Next I drilled from the outside wall into the basement corner behind the drywall with the hilti concrete drill. Being extra careful not to drill all the way through, I then stuffed a flag with a loop on it into the hole. I went back inside to pull up on the rod and it hooked the flag! … (super super tricky) I brought the wire in and up and spliced it with a serpentine in case we needed slack in the future. All of this part was above the ceiling so no wire was visible!
The wire from the outside was now connected all the way through the basement with little or no evidence we were ever there!
Next, Amanda powered up the OT 300 and set the Link collar on medium edge to edge. (We had tried the system without this feature and found signal in places where we didn’t want it.)
Now, it worked!
It all worked!
No signal on stairs!
No signal on first floor!
No signal in basement!
No signal in bed rooms!
No interference with the other system!
It really was a feat of engineering!
My install team did a fantastic job of hiding the wire from all danger!
The dog is free to roam everywhere his owner owns!
And, to top it all off, we left very little trace of our ever being there!
The customer was overjoyed!
The dog trained very well to the Link system and had fun doing it!
She and her neighbor are good friends and we are happy to have to opportunity to help her AND her neighbor keep their dogs safe and running in their own yards!
Soon,we hope to have permission to correct some of the exposed wire that the other company left open to damage with their “install”!
