The sunshine is back, the walks are longer, and your dog is ready to make questionable choices at full speed. ☀️🐾
Summer heat safety starts now — not when it’s already 95 degrees and your dog is trying to become one with the pavement.
Before heading out, remember:
🔥 Check the pavement
Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws.
💧 Bring water
Panting is not a personality trait. Dogs need frequent water breaks, especially on walks, hikes, and outdoor adventures.
🌳 Choose shade and cooler times of day
Morning and evening walks are safer than midday walks when temperatures climb.
🐶 Be extra careful with flat-faced breeds
Bulldogs, Frenchies, Pugs, Boxers, and other brachycephalic breeds can overheat faster.
👵 Watch senior pets closely
Older pets, overweight pets, puppies, and pets with heart or breathing issues may struggle more in the heat.
Warning signs of overheating can include heavy panting, weakness, drooling, vomiting, bright red gums, collapse, or acting “off.”
When in doubt, skip the hot walk and go for indoor enrichment instead. Your dog may disagree, but your dog also thinks sidewalk snacks are cuisine. 😅
