🦷🐾 What really happens during your pet’s dental procedure?

It’s much more than a quick cleaning—your pet gets the same high level of care you’d expect at your own dentist (and maybe even more!). Here’s a behind-the-scenes look:

1️⃣ Anesthesia & Monitoring
Because pets won’t sit still and can’t understand what’s happening, anesthesia is essential. Your pet is safely placed under anesthesia, and our trained team carefully monitors heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and temperature throughout the procedure.

2️⃣ Full Oral Exam
Once your pet is comfortable, the veterinarian performs a thorough exam of every tooth and gum surface. This allows us to look for hidden problems like broken teeth, infection, or gum disease that aren’t visible when they’re awake.

3️⃣ Dental Radiographs (X-rays)
Just like at your dentist’s office, we take radiographs to look under the gumline. Many serious issues—such as tooth root infections, bone loss, or abscesses—can only be seen this way.

4️⃣ Cleaning & Treatment
Every tooth is carefully scaled to remove plaque and tartar (above and below the gumline), then polished to smooth the surface. If diseased teeth are found, extractions or other treatments may be recommended to keep your pet comfortable and healthy.

5️⃣ Recovery & Aftercare
Your pet is gently monitored as they wake up from anesthesia, and we’ll provide pain relief and home care instructions to make sure their recovery is smooth and stress-free.

✨ Dental care isn’t just about a shiny smile—it helps prevent pain, infection, and even serious health problems that can affect the heart, liver, and kidneys.

Celebrating 25 Amazing Years of KATIE!

Today we’re honoring someone incredibly special, Katie, who has been a vital part of Puyallup Valley Vet for 25 years! 🐾

For a quarter of a century, she has shown unwavering dedication, compassion, and love for every furry patient that walks through our doors. From comforting nervous pets to supporting our veterinary team with a calm and capable hand, Katie is truly the heart of our hospital.

We are beyond grateful for her hard work, kindness, and the countless lives she’s helped make better.

In true Katie fashion, she’s elected to show a picture of her cat, Cricket, instead of herself. Drop some love for Katie below!

☀️🐾 Keep Your Pets Cool This Summer! 🐾☀️

Summer heat is here, and while we’re soaking up the sun, our furry friends can be at serious risk of overheating. Heatstroke in pets can happen fast and is extremely dangerous—especially for flat-faced breeds, seniors, overweight pets, and those with medical conditions.

Here are some hot-weather safety tips to keep your pet cool and safe:

🌿 Provide shade & fresh water at all times
🏡 Keep pets indoors during the hottest parts of the day (10am–4pm)
🚫 Never leave pets in parked cars, even for a few minutes—temperatures can soar in seconds
🐾 Avoid hot pavement—if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws
💦 Use cooling mats, frozen treats, or kiddie pools for extra chill time
🚶‍♂️ Walk early or late in the day when it’s cooler

⚠️ Watch for signs of heatstroke: excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, or collapse. If you suspect heatstroke, contact us immediately—it’s an emergency!

Let’s make it a safe, happy summer for all your four-legged family members! 🌞🐶🐱

Penny was looking extra stylish today for her laser therapy and acupuncture appointment! Did you know that laser therapy and acupuncture are safe, non-invasive options that can help your pet feel their best?

🐾 Laser Therapy helps reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and speed up healing—perfect for pets with arthritis, injuries, or post-surgery recovery.
🐾 Acupuncture promotes natural healing by improving blood flow, relieving pain, and restoring balance. It’s great for chronic conditions like joint pain, nerve issues, and even digestive problems!

These treatments are gentle, stress-free, and often very relaxing for pets.

Introducing Dr. Christine Stevens!!
We are so excited to be welcoming a new doctor to our practice, starting today!

A little about Dr. Stevens:
Dr. Christine Stevens is an experienced veterinarian who is excited to join the Puyallup Valley Veterinary team. Dr. Stevens is a Western Washington native who knew from a young age that she wanted to become a veterinarian - a career that combines her love of animals with her love of science. She grew up in Covington surrounded by dogs, cats and horses. Dr. Stevens obtained a bachelors degree in Animal Sciences in 2002, followed by her Veterinary Degree at Washington State University in 2006.

Following graduation from veterinary school Dr. Stevens moved back to Western Washington where she has lived and worked ever since. While she loves all animals, she particularly enjoys geriatric animals, pediatrics and pain management. After witnessing her own elderly large breed dogs struggle with mobility issues early in her career she decided to obtain additional training and certification in Veterinary Rehabilitation and Acupuncture to be able to offer additional treatments for patients struggling with mobility and pain. Dr. Stevens greatly enjoys forming bonds with her clients and patients, low stress handling and client education. She loves that every day in the clinic brings different cases and new learning opportunities - her goal is to learn something new every day.

When she is not in the clinic, you might find her at a hockey rink with her two sons and husband (Go Kraken!), reading books, spending time with her own pets (a golden retriever, a german shepherd, a ridiculous yorkshire terrier and 4 crazy cats) or volunteering for a local animal rescue group. Dr. Stevens often has foster pets in her home (or her pockets) and particularly enjoys helping special needs rescue animals.
