Bear is one of our sweet regular visitors who stops by every 2 days for his subcutaneous fluid treatments! 🐾💙

For pets with kidney disease, staying hydrated is extremely important. When the kidneys aren’t working as well as they should, they have a harder time holding onto water and filtering waste properly. This can leave pets feeling tired, nauseous, and dehydrated.

Subcutaneous fluids help by giving extra hydration under the skin, which is slowly absorbed into the body. This helps support kidney function, improves comfort, boosts energy, and helps our furry friends feel their best.

Bear is always such a good boy during his visits, and Bree loves helping him stay happy and comfortable! 🐶💧🐾

Cats are naturally curious, but that curiosity can sometimes lead to trouble. 🐱 Small items like string, hair ties, rubber bands, and toys can be tempting to play with—but if swallowed, they can cause foreign body blockages in the stomach or intestines.

Symptoms may include vomiting, decreased appetite, lethargy, or abdominal discomfort, and these cases can sometimes require surgery.

Recently, we treated a sweet patient named Trinity who we suspected had a foreign body issue. Luckily, Trinity responded very well to medical therapy and made a great recovery without needing surgery. We were so happy he was able to avoid a surgical procedure and get back to feeling like himself again! 💙🐾

🐾Fun Fact Friday! 🐾

Meet this rare and fascinating breed of dog — the Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced show-low-eats-QUEENT-lee)!

We were lucky enough to meet Coba, a Xoloitzcuintli, yesterday when he came in for a routine neuter. Not only is this breed unique in appearance, but Coba was also one of the happiest patients! He spent the day making lots of new friends with our team and soaking up all the attention.

The Xoloitzcuintli, also known as the Mexican Hairless Dog, is one of the oldest and rarest dog breeds in the world, dating back over 3,000 years. They are known for their loyal personalities, warm skin, and affectionate nature.

We love getting to meet such special patients like Coba! 🐶

Did you know that acupuncture can be a safe and effective way to help pets feel their best? 🐾

Veterinary acupuncture is often used to help manage pain, improve mobility, support healing, and enhance overall quality of life for pets dealing with conditions such as arthritis, neurological issues, or chronic pain. Many pets find acupuncture sessions relaxing, and it can be used alongside traditional veterinary treatments.

At Choice Veterinary Services, Dr. Shaw is a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist (CVA) through the Chi Institute and has completed advanced training in acupuncture for both small animals and exotic species.

If you’re curious whether acupuncture might benefit your pet, give us a call—we would be happy to talk with you about this holistic treatment option! 💚

❄️ Cold Weather & Colic ❄️

As temperatures drop, colic season likes to sneak in uninvited. Cold weather itself doesn’t cause colic—but the changes that come with winter absolutely can.

Help prevent it:
✔️ Check water daily (hydration is key)
✔️ Provide electrolytes & salt
✔️ Keep hay consistent and plentiful
✔️ Encourage movement
✔️ Monitor manure output

🚨 Early warning signs:
• Reduced appetite
• Fewer or drier manure piles
• Pawing, stretching, looking at sides
• Lying down more than usual
• Just “not acting right”
Trust your gut—if something feels off, call early.
Winter care is all about being proactive. ❄️🐎
