Notice if your cat urinates outside of the litter box. While sometimes it’s because the box dirty. But before you blame the accident on the state of the litter box or your cat's naughty behavior, schedule a visit to the veterinarian. A change in litter box habits sometimes means that a cat has an urinary tract infection or other medical issue.

National Pi Day.
A little history of pi: About two thousand years ago, the value of pi was calculated by Archimedes of Syracuse (287–212 BC), one of the greatest mathematicians of the ancient world.
However, in 1647, William Oughtred changed the name to the Greek letter pi when writing about it in his scientific works. It wasn’t embraced by the scientific until 1737, when Leonhard Euler began using the symbol.
That was fun, but did you know how it became a holiday?
In 1988, physicist Larry Shaw wanted to set up a fun event for the staff at the Exploratorium in San Francisco.
In true mathematical geekdom, the party was set for March 14 (3.14) and pie and tea served at 1:59 (the next 3 numbers of pi.)
A couple of years later, it was noted that March 14th was Albert Einstein’s birthday. For many years it was only celebrated at the Exploratorium, but it became so popular that on March 12, 2009 the U.S Congress declared it a national holiday.
Personally, I love Apple Pie. What’s your favorite?

Love it or hate, Daylight Saving Time is here. But did you know the origins of DST?

It was first proposed by Ben Franklin, but didn’t go anywhere at the time.

In 1895, George Hudson, an entomologist from New Zealand proposed a two-hour time shift so he’d have more hours of sunshine to go bug hunting in the summer.

In 1902, British builder William Willett also thought some extra hours to go horseback riding in the summer sounded good and presented it to England’s Parliament. Even Winston Churchill and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle thought it was a good idea, but it didn’t pass.

It wasn’t until 1916, that Germany instituted it as a means to save energy. Soon afterwards, almost all of Europe followed suit.

On March 9, 1918, Congress enacted its first daylight saving law, while defining the first set time zones across the country.

Only Arizona and Hawaii do not recognize Daylight Saving Time. And to complicate matters in Arizona, some of the Native Indian Nations recognize it and others do not.

It’s National Red Cross Month. Founded by Clara Barton on May 21, 1881. Barton led the Red Cross for 23 years, during which time they conducted domestic and overseas disaster relief efforts and aided the United States military during the Spanish-American War. Prior to the First World War, the Red Cross first introduced first aid, water safety, and public health nursing programs. It was Red Cross nurses that stepped up to help during the influenza epidemic of 1918. After World War II, the Red Cross introduced the first nationwide civilian blood program that now supplies more than 40 percent of the blood and blood products in the United States. Because Congress granted a charter to the Red Cross, first in 1900, they are able to work together with FEMA helping government agencies and community organize plans, coordinate and provide feeding, sheltering and family reunification services for people affected by disasters.

Did you know that 90% of the Red Cross workers are volunteers? These volunteers respond to over 60,000 disasters every year. Over 25,000 volunteers alone help with blood drives. If you think you might be interested in being a volunteer: https://www.redcross.org/volunteer/become-a-volunteer.html#step1.

Strawberry Heart Banana Frozen Treats

Ingredients
2 bananas
1/4 cup plain nonfat yogurt
6 strawberries

Directions
Peel and puree bananas with a blender or mash them.
Mix yogurt with bananas to thin out the liquid. You can add as much yogurt as you like.
Pour banana and yogurt mixture into silicone molds or ice cube trays. Leave some room for the strawberries.
Cut the strawberry tops off in a V-shape. Strawberries should now resemble hearts.
Slice each strawberry into 4-6 pieces, so that each slice still resembles a heart.
Place a strawberry slice on top of each section of banana and yogurt mixture. Press the strawberry into the mixture slightly.
Freeze for 2-3 hours or until frozen and serve.

Cranberry Hearts

Ingredients

2 Eggs
1 and 1/2 Cups Almond Flour
1 Tablespoon Coconut Oil
3-4 Tablespoons of Coconut Flour
1/2 Cup Dried Cranberries

Directions

Preheat oven to 325
Beat 2 eggs and set aside.
Combine your almond flour, coconut oil and dried cranberries together in a bowl.
Add eggs. And mix well.
Begin adding in your coconut flour one Tbsp at a time, mixing in each one after added. You want to achieve a consistency that is easy to roll and not super sticky. This will require between 3-4 TBSP depending on your brand of flour and size of your eggs. The dough should easily form a ball.
Rollout your dough and cut out the treats using bite sized cookie cutters.
Place your treats on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the oven for 15-18 minutes or until crisp.

Valentine’s Day is around the corner. And while it can be a fun and exciting holiday for us, it can be dangerous for your pets.
Chocolate
Pets tend to like chocolate just as much as we do. Unfortunately, chocolate is toxic for dogs and cats. The darker the chocolate, the higher the concentrations of theobromine, which is toxic to pets. It is weight dependent, meaning the smaller the pet, the less chocolate is needed for poisoning.
Sugar Free Candy
Sugar free candy may contain xylitol, a sugar free additive. Xylitol can poison pets, resulting in liver failure and death. Keep all sugar free candies up and away from your pet.
Toxic and Thorny Flowers
Lilies and daffodils are toxic for pets, as are a variety of other plants. If you’re uncertain about a plant’s toxicity, check with the pet poison hotline or contact your pet’s veterinarian. Don’t forget that thorns are also dangerous for pets, who can get infections from puncture wounds. You can remove the thorns before placing in a vase.
Shiny Packaging
Ribbons, cellophane, wrapping paper, candy wrappers, and other shiny, attractive decorations can draw attention of pets. When ingested, these attractive objects can cause intestinal blockages and other problems. Clean up gifts immediately after opening them and never leave wrapping paper or decorations laying around where they can be reached by your pet.
Careful With Alcohol
Animals are smaller than humans so a little bit of alcohol can do a lot of harm, causing vomiting, diarrhea, lack of coordination, nervous system depression, tremors, difficulty breathing, metabolic disturbances and even coma or death.
Watch Those Romantic Candle
It’s nice to set your evening a-glow with candlelight, but put out the fire when you leave the room. Pawing pets can burn themselves or cause a fire by knocking over unattended candles.

Watch for Signs of Poisoning and Injury
Minutes matter in any poisoning. Know when to get help. Have emergency numbers handy. If your pet displays the following symptoms, contact an emergency veterinarian for advice:
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Shakes and chills
Seizures
Coma
Fever
Lack of coordination
Weakness
Difficulty standing
Labored breathing
Confusion

Knowing the ways that your pet can be harmed can help you take care of your pet and avoid a medical emergency. We love your pets and look forward to continually serving them for a long time.
