We spend a lot of time talking about behavior at Ruff Pup.

But here's something we believe strongly:

We have to look at the whole dog.

Training matters.

But so do nutrition, physical health, exercise, sleep, enrichment, grooming, social needs and emotional well-being.

They all contribute to the dog standing in front of us.

🐾 𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗖𝗔𝗠𝗣 𝗜𝗦𝗡'𝗧 𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗗𝗢𝗚 𝗔 𝗕𝗨𝗡𝗖𝗛 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗞𝗦.

Sit is useful.

Down is useful.

Stay is useful.

But what most owners actually want is pretty simple:

They want life with their dog to be easier.

They want to walk without being dragged.

Open the front door without chaos.

Sit somewhere with their dog without constantly correcting them.

Call them and have them COME.

Take them somewhere new without everything falling apart.

And sometimes...

They just want to sit on the couch at night while their dog actually settles down. 😂

That's what we're building in Day Camp.

Yes, we teach obedience.

But obedience gives us a language.

Then we use that language to work on:

🐾 Reactivity when appropriate
🐾 Real-world behavior

And then we teach YOU how to continue it at home.

Because the ultimate goal isn't a perfectly trained dog.

🐾 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗗𝗢𝗚 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪𝗦 𝗦𝗜𝗧. 𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧. 𝗡𝗢𝗪 𝗪𝗔𝗟𝗞 𝟮𝟬 𝗙𝗘𝗘𝗧 𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗬. 😂

Tonight at Ruff Pup Foundations & Obedience, we're taking the cues our dogs already know and making them useful in the REAL world.

We're working on the three D's:

📏 𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘
Can your dog respond when you're not standing right beside them?

⏱️ 𝗗𝗨𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡
Can they hold a behavior longer than a few seconds?

🌎 𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦
Can they still listen when dogs, people, noises and life are happening around them?

Because there's a big difference between:

“My dog knows Stay.”

and...

“My dog can Stay while something interesting is happening.”

That's where practice comes in.

Group Class gives you a controlled environment to challenge your dog, learn what needs more work and become a better team together.

🐾 DOG OF THE DAY — MEEKO!

There are dogs who pull on walks...

And then there's Meeko. 😂

Meeko is a MASSIVE American Bulldog who came to Ruff Pup with a very different interpretation of how walking should work.

Basically:

Meeko went where Meeko wanted to go.

And if he DIDN'T want to go?

🥞 PANCAKE.

Right to the ground.

He's big.

He's strong.

He's stubborn.

And underneath all of that confidence, there's also some insecurity.

The problem wasn't that Meeko was incapable of learning.

He didn't understand what his owners wanted from him.

So we've spent the last week and a half figuring out how to communicate with him.

We found a training tool that works well for Meeko.

We've been teaching him how to respond to it.

Building his confidence.

Working through his stubborn moments.

And most importantly...

Teaching his owners how to communicate with him too.

And the difference is already becoming pretty obvious.

The dog who used to take his owners for walks is beginning to understand that there's actually someone on the other end of that leash. 😂

His owners are learning how to guide him successfully instead of simply trying to overpower a very large dog.

Is Meeko finished?

Nope.

And that's okay.

He's still building confidence.

He's still becoming comfortable with our team.

He's still learning.

His owners are still learning.

But every successful walk builds another piece of the relationship.

Every clear interaction makes the next one easier.

And as those insecurities continue to fade, we're getting to see more and more of the dog Meeko can become.

Big. Confident. Connected. And able to enjoy a whole lot more of life with his people.

THAT is progress.

And we're pretty proud of you, Meeko. ❤️🐾

🐾 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗖𝗔𝗠𝗣 𝗗𝗢𝗘𝗦𝗡'𝗧 𝗛𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗘𝗡 𝗔𝗧 𝗥𝗨𝗙𝗙 𝗣𝗨𝗣.

It happens at home.

Let me explain.

A dog comes to us pulling their owner down the street.

They're strong.

They're distracted.

The owner is frustrated.

Sometimes they've literally been knocked off their feet.

So our trainers get to work.

We determine which training tool communicates most clearly with THAT dog.

We teach the dog what leash pressure means.

We teach them where we want them to walk.

We build engagement.

We practice around distractions.

We work on impulse control.

And eventually our trainer can walk the dog beautifully.

That's great.

But that's not the win.

Then we put the leash in the owner's hand.

We teach THEM how to use the tool.

How to communicate.

When to guide.

When to reinforce.

When to give their dog a little help.

And they go home and practice.

Then something pretty incredible starts happening.

The next walk is easier.

Then another.

Then another.

The owner starts seeing the same dog we've been seeing.

That's the magic.

Not perfection.

Progress.

And after Day Camp, we're still there.

Tonight at Play & Engagement Class, we're exploring something that sounds simple:

PLAY.

But we're specifically diving into Tug & Personal Play and teaching our dogs something incredibly valuable:

Can your dog get excited, play hard and engage with you...

And then come back down when the game is over?

That's a skill.

Play can be one of the most powerful tools we have for building:

And not every dog wants to play the same way!

Tonight we'll experiment with tug, movement, personal play and different ways of making YOU part of what your dog finds rewarding.

Because training shouldn't always feel like work.

Sometimes the best training happens when your dog thinks you're just having fun together.

🐶💦 WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE HUMANS GET KICKED OUT OF THE POOL...

And the DOGS take over?!

Ruff Pup is excited to be part of the K-PUP Puppy Paddle Pool Party at the Provo Recreation Center!

At the end of summer, the pool is going to the DOGS!

🐾 Little Dogs under 35 lbs: 10:00–11:45 AM
🐕 Mixed Dogs: Noon–2:00 PM

And swimming isn't the only thing happening.

🎉 Activities
💦 And a whole lot of wet dogs!

Humans are FREE. Dogs are $8.

Ruff Pup will be there hanging out, meeting dogs and enjoying one of the coolest dog-friendly community events of the year.

🐾 𝗗𝗢𝗚 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗔𝗬 — 𝗦𝗨𝗠𝗠𝗜𝗧!

Some dogs come to Ruff Pup for training.

Some come for Daycare.

And some basically become part of the family. ❤️

Meet Summit, a 10-month-old Bernedoodle who's been coming to Ruff Pup since December!

Summit started his Ruff Pup journey in our 6-Week Day Camp, where he worked his way beyond basic puppy manners into some pretty impressive skills:

🐾 Advanced obedience
🏔️ Long-distance recalls
🐕 Off-leash reliability
🧠 Impulse control
🌎 Working around real-world distractions

And those skills aren't just something Summit learned inside a training facility.

He actually gets to USE them.

Summit is an adventure dog! He spends many of his weekends exploring the mountains with his owner, and that's exactly what we want training to become:

More freedom. More adventures. More life together.

These days, Summit comes back to Ruff Pup for Daycare, where he's become an awesome member of our social groups.

He's incredibly chill and brings this wonderful calm energy into the room—but don't mistake calm for boring. 😂

Summit knows how to PLAY, and he's especially good at helping some of our newer dogs figure out how to loosen up and have a good time.

He's definitely a staff favorite.

Although...

If you asked Summit who HIS favorite Ruff Pup employee is, we're pretty sure he'd answer:

Catt.

Without hesitation. 😂❤️

🐾 𝗦𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗢𝗨𝗦 𝗤𝗨𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡...

What does your dog actually do while you're gone all day?

For a lot of dogs:

Sleep.

Look out the window.

Sleep again.

Bark at Amazon.

Check whether you've magically appeared.

Another nap.

Maybe destroy something they're definitely not supposed to destroy. 😂

And now that the kids are back in school, some dogs are suddenly spending a LOT more time alone.

That's why we're putting a big spotlight on Ruff Pup Daycare this September.

Daycare gives your dog an opportunity to:

🐕 Socialize with appropriate dogs
🎾 Play and interact
❤️ Spend time with our staff
🧠 Experience enrichment and activity
🐾 Practice appropriate social behavior
😴 And yes...take a break when they need one!

Because good Daycare isn't eight straight hours of chaos.

Dogs need opportunities to play AND settle.

They need appropriate friends.

They need supervision.

And they need people who learn their individual personalities.

Some Ruff Pup dogs are the life of the party.

Some have two best friends.

Some mostly want to hang out with the humans.

We're okay with all of it.

We've got TWO classes happening tonight, depending on what you and your dog are working toward.

🏅 6:00 PM — CANINE GOOD CITIZEN PRACTICE

Working toward your AKC Canine Good Citizen or Community Canine title?

Come practice the real-world skills you and your dog need to become a reliable team.

We'll work around other dogs and people while practicing things like:

🐾 Polite greetings
🐾 Loose-leash walking
🐾 Staying focused around distractions
🐾 Sit, Down & Stay
🐾 Recall
🐾 Calm, appropriate behavior in public

Then at...

❤️ 7:00 PM — THERAPY DOG TRAINING

For owners interested in taking their dog's training one step further and learning what it takes to become a Therapy Dog Team.

Therapy work isn't simply having a friendly dog.

It's about you AND your dog learning to work together around people, distractions, unusual environments and situations while remaining calm, comfortable and connected.
