Please read this letter by Sam Lloyd (‘07) regarding the prospect of an Ivy League field hockey tournament and consider voicing your support.
“Dear Fellow Brown Bears,
It's been over a decade since I last sported a Brown jersey with the Ivy League seal, but my memories are still tinged with one lingering regret: never having had a chance to compete in playoff hockey. I think it’s safe to say that we all would have appreciated the chance to take another crack at Harvard, launch an underdog attack to take Princeton down a peg, or seize on one last chance to play Penn without the home-cooked reffing on their toast-covered field turf.
The structure of our league prevented us from having those opportunities for postseason glory. Instead, we were always very much aware of when our fate was sealed--- Ivy Title off the table, no ring, no NCAA tournament appearance, just some turkey after we played our final game against Yale (even if it was really, really good turkey).
While we may not have had the chance, I think the young athletes coming up behind us deserve more, don’t you? The 8 Ivy League coaches have unanimously voted to approve an end of season tournament; current and former student athletes have enthusiastically voiced their support for the tournament; and yet the decision still lies in the hands of the league athletic directors, who are set to meet next week.
Key Facts:
- The request for an Ivy League tournament dates back to 1994.
- The Ivy League Athletic Directors have continued to reject field hockey's request for a tournament despite approving end-of season tournaments for men's and women's lacrosse AND men's and women's basketball. It is simply time to rectify this inequality.
- The Ivy League is the ONLY field hockey conference that does not support an end of season tournament.
- Of all the field hockey conferences, the Ivy League holds the No. 3 RPI ranking (just behind the ACC and the Big Ten).
- The 8 field hockey coaches have already unanimously approved a 4-team Ivy League Conference tournament to determine the league's automatic NCAA qualification spot.
- The Ivy League Meetings start Monday, May 7th and run through the 10th.
Formal legislation has already been drafted and the League Athletic Directors are prepared to vote on it . . . So, what can we do to help?
(1) Kyle DeSandes-Moyer, a UPENN alumna, has drafted this petition: https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/ivy-league-field-hockey-tournament . She just cleared 1,000 signatures but let’s keep this rolling!
(2) Please consider preparing a letter (or email) of support that can be sent to the top three key officials at each school. By submitting letters on behalf of former and current student athletes, the administrators will hear our strong unified voice saying the Ivy League field hockey tournament is long overdue. (you can just send these back to me)
