At Cornerstone Ranch, we consistently practice ground-tying for all our horses, as it fosters their trust, confidence, and independence while ensuring both theirs’ and our safety and well-being. This training also helps produce calm, disciplined, and attentive horses. Training horses to stand without following enables us to step away from a horse to close gates, grab bug spray, or fetch a lead line from the fence without having to bring the horse along every single step. This makes things much easier for the handlers.

A horse that follows its handler without clear instructions may lose its spatial awareness and become overly dependent. To encourage independence, we reward with treats for standing still, helping them understand the positive outcomes of waiting for the next command. Although this process requires time and patience, the benefits it brings to both the horse and its handler are evident in the short term, and promise even greater rewards in the long run. As we say, "If they stand, treat 'em; if they don't, back 'em!"

Our farrier Shawn came for camp today to demonstrate how to trim and shoe a horse. Thank you for a great educational demonstration and taking time to thoughtfully answer the kid’s questions. We are so lucky to have someone who always shows up, and keeps our horses hooves looking and feeling great!

For many, spending time at the barn offers a serene escape, a sense of belonging, and a home-away-from-home experience. Social cues are learned at a young age. We see kids pick up on facial expressions, and mimic them without prompting. Our brains are fascinating.
As we get older we lock in our ways, learned cues become habits. And very hard to break!

Then we add in a horse in adulthood and try to learn a new language like our brains are sponges again.. but they aren’t. And we get frustrated.

This is a normal part of learning, be a kid again! Try to notice the details, and don’t be afraid to mess up!

We prioritize horse safety at the ranch and were delighted to assist fellow animal lovers and learn about their training, and the similarities and differences of the dogs and horses! 🐶🐴
