A pied billed grebe was rescued from being attacked by crows on Monday. It mistook the Bluefield post office parking lot ice as water and landed, thereby grounding himself and making him unable to escape the crows. Grebes cannot take off from solid land. Their legs are too far back on their bodies to stand and their chests are too heavy. They have to take off from water. They are excellent at diving and pursuing minnows under water tho! Fortunately there were no bad injuries before a kind person rescued him, but there was no open creek or large pond to release him after a night's rest with Staff Veterinarian Dr Bill Streit at All Creatures Veterinary Clinic in Princeton. The decision was made to get him to the New River where water was still running, despite icy patches. He was so happy to be back in running water!! He immediately started diving and swimming.
