Who else is excited about this cold front moving through today? I’m thinking this should get the deer moving a bit more during daylight tomorrow meaning we hopefully get to track a few deer this weekend!

If your schedule allows, this first big October cold front is definitely one you don’t want to miss!

I’m grateful for my supportive and awesome wife for understanding I should be in the woods tomorrow morning even though it is our wedding anniversary! I love you April Larson!

Good luck hunters, and shoot straight! 🏹🦌

Well, it’s been a slow start to the season as usual. We’ve tracked 5 deer so far with 1 recovery.

Track #1 - Found. Quartering to, hit both lungs, liver, and guts. 200 yard track.

Track #2 - Not found. Broadside shot, arrow was found with little to no blood, had fat and meat on fletchings and nock had collapsed into the arrow shaft. Hit was low and back I believe in stomach muscle missing vitals and guts. Received proof of life picture ~3 weeks later.

Track #3 - Not found. Quartering away, hunter said he aimed and hit right behind the shoulder which would be forward on a quartering away shot. Tracked next morning after 2”+ rain fell. Hunter found him bedded shortly after the shot but couldn’t get a shot and he ran off. Blindly searched afterwards. Dax struggled really hard acquiring any scent. We eventually ran out of property with no permission to cross onto the neighbors. Guessing single lung or missed vitals all together with the forward quartering shot.

Track #4 - Not found. Quartering away shot. Hunter couldn’t recall where they hit the deer. They tracked and grid searched after. Dax tracked to the hunter’s point of loss and couldn’t advance past it. We tried wind scenting the marsh to no avail. I had a hard time walking away from this one since I never saw much from the dog. Blood looked like lung. If I had to guess it was single lung at best.

Track #5 - Not found. Broadside shot. Lighted nock didn’t illuminate so hunter couldn’t tell where he hit. Tracked blood/tracks for ~150 yards then blindly searched past the point of loss. Never found the bolt but had found a single bloody fletching. Dax took a while to advance past last blood but then took the trail for another 200 yards before losing interest. Based off the evidence, guessing high shoulder with arrow buried in opposite shoulder.

Hoping we can put another one on the tailgate soon!

Just got a proof of life picture from a track we took a few weeks back. The hunter knew he hit him low and back. Dax worked really hard tracking him across a big standing bean field. There was a little blood on the edge of the bean field leading into public marsh. Once we got there, Dax seemed to kind’ve lose interest which is usually indicative of a live deer. At the time, I was worried that he was wore out from tracking through the beans that he was just done.

Even though the sign and hunter accounts seemed to point to a live deer, when we don’t find one it always leaves you second guessing. These proof of life pictures give the hunter greater closure, and give us confidence that what we are seeing is correct.
I’m hoping the hunter gets another poke at this one! 🏹🦌

Some reminders!!
-Pay attention to the reaction of the deer when you shoot! Their reaction gives a lot of clues about where they are hit.

-If you take up the trail, stay to the side of it. If you end up running out of blood, MARK MARK MARK last blood. I can’t stress that enough. I don’t mean, “that tree right there with the funny branch is right next to it, I’ll remember.”Use onX or similar hunting app, use toilet paper, use a glove. Once you’ve marked it, back out without crossing or walking on the track.

-Never blindly look for blood past the point of loss. If you’ve lost blood, it’s time to call in the dog.

-Shoot straight, call us if you need us!
