I can’t help but wonder where we are headed. As Facebook continues to replace what is good for what sounds good, horsemanship tends to get worse. Every time I scroll Facebook I see absolute garbage horse training advice. The passive, stress free way of training a horse is being championed while it continues to lack effectiveness and results. Trainers getting results and helping horses are being cancelled one secret video at a time. We can turn fluffy out in the pasture and his horse buddy is allowed to kick the hair off of him but heaven forbid a human hit him with a whip. 😱

I keep waiting for a course correction. I keep waiting for people to realize what it actually takes to have a confident and willing horse who is also reliable in a difficult situation. Those ideas you learn from Disney movies don’t actually work. It’s just a 6 year path to average results. Yay for you! But people making a living training a horse aren’t privileged enough to have 6 years to build an average horse for a client.

My faith in people is often restored in face-to-face interactions. People are accepting of what actually works. People understand that an obedient horse is safer, happier, and gets a better home in the long run. They also realize that it’s not a stress-free life so stress-free training doesn’t really make sense. A trainers job is to prepare a horse for real life, and real life throws curveballs.

You don’t learn to handle difficulty by never doing anything difficult. You learn to handle difficulty through successfully navigating difficult situations.

C**t starting competitions!!!

Road to the horse is one of the biggest horse events of the year and many other local, regional, and national competitions with a similar format run all over the country every year.

A place for c**t starters to show off their program, generate business, and celebrate the not so polished aspects of the equine industry…

Right??

I see the benefits of c**t starting competitions, and I, myself, have competed in quite a few. That being said, there is one big issue I struggle with every time I compete.

**THESE HORSES ARE NOT BROKE**

Yes, we ride them

Yes, we throw ropes and crack bull whips off their back

Yes, we ride over bridges and chase cattle on day 2.

We really do get those things done… but in my experience, the key to winning the judge and audience over is to do the bare minimum training, with the maximum result. As any trainer or horseman knows… thoes kind of sessions do not have lasting results.

While we can make a 2 day c**t look “broke”, we are filling their minds with quick fix, bandaid solutions to get through the final round.

Fortunately I’ve been able to bring home my last 2 horses from c**t startings along with a bonus horse from a fellow competitor.

Once they get home these horses are hard to soften, hard to guide, and hard to get forward out of… but why?!!

In my opinion it’s how they were started to begin with. There was a time limit of training. There are 10-15 tasks to complete per round. And the pressure and stress of competition, typically reserved for a broke, tuned up horse was pushed onto this 2 year old unstarted c**t. Of course they aren’t going to be the best. Most require a restart directly after competition.

I’m not trying to trash c**t starting competitions. Personally I love them and plan on doing them for the rest of my life, god willing. But I really really want to stress the importance of continued and ethical training after the completion. I wouldn’t send a horse home as broke after 2 days, so I wouldn’t call a competition horse broke after the final round is over. It’s simply a game of showing the natural strong points and hiding the rest to the best of your ability.

Just my thoughts for the night.

Advance Horsemanship is kicking off 2025 with some exciting things!

We are on the road touring with Knights of Valour!

Knights of Valour owned by Shane Adams, is the ONLY full contact, heavy amour jousting company world wide! Shane hosts a plethora of international events annually, bringing jousters from the US, Canada and Mexico, to renaissance , state and county fairs. For more info on KOV you can see them on their show “Full Metal Jousting” on Amazon Prime.

We are so excited that Shane and KOV has brought Amber and her Liberty team (Atlas, Tribbiani and Wilson) on to be the opening act for the full metal jousting.
It has been a long time in the works, but Amber is excited to unveil her Greek methodology inspired performance entitled “Athena’s Flying Free”

For the past two months Isaac has been preparing two prospects to enter the jousting list. The goal is to bring new young stock into the company as the veteran jousting horses age out.

Starting c**ts is one thing but training jousting horses is a whole new world. So in order to do the best job possible Isaac is undergoing training to be a knight! The tentative plan is for him to be in his first joust at the end of this tour.

As always thank you to our sponsors for keeping our horses looking and feeling their absolute best!

Mustang Magic Recap!

Isaac and I (Amber) recently took a brief break from social media to recharge and focus on the ranch. Now that we’ve caught up on training horses, we’re excited to share our experience at Mustang Magic.

Isaac and Mi$$ Norjack Recap:

First and foremost, I am incredibly proud of Isaac and Mi$$ Norjack for their outstanding performance at the competition. Isaac worked tirelessly with Nora to bring her to this point, and it was no easy feat. Training a gaited horse presented significant physical challenges for Isaac, especially as he focused on transitioning Nora from her natural gait to a trot.
I can confidently say that had I drawn Nora, I wouldn't have achieved nearly as much as Isaac did. Isaac’s persistence paid off, and he developed a reliable, safe, and enjoyable partner.
They handled the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo environment with poise and professionalism, showing exceptional composure throughout. I couldn’t be more pleased with the level of horsemanship and integrity he displayed throughout the show.

🏅Results:
* 1st place in Handling and Conditioning!! (a class Isaac was particularly pleased with, given it’s his least favorite😂)
* 9th place in Mustang Maneuvers
* 3rd place in Trail
* 13th place in Compulsory Maneuvers

Isaac finished 11th overall, keeping him out of the finals by just 1.5 points.

While we are disappointed he didn’t make the finals, we are incredibly proud of the well-rounded mare he presented.

We are also thrilled to announce that Mi$$ Norjack has found a wonderful new home in New Mexico!

Amber and Drippin N' Diamonds Recap:

When I first saw Smidge during pickup, I couldn't stop talking to Isaac about her. To say the least Isaac wasn’t feeling as fond of her as I was. 😂 While she wasn’t the flashiest, nor the friendliest, something about her athletic build and watchful eye kept drawing me in. I couldn’t quite explain why, but I felt she was the one.
During the training period, I faced many moments of doubt. Smidge was undoubtedly one of the most reactive mustangs I’ve ever had, yet she was also one of the most talented. She tested my patience, confidence, and skills, but with the invaluable support of Isaac and my mom, Smidge and I persevered.
I was amazed by how Smidge adapted to the Stock Show and Rodeo environment. Though we had our challenges, her standout moment came during the Compulsory Maneuvers, where she excelled. For the freestyle, we focused on enjoying our last ride together—and we certainly did!
I am deeply thankful for Smidge, who taught me so much and helped me achieve so many of my dreams. She will always hold a special place in my heart.

🏅Results:
* 11th place in Handling and Conditioning
* 5th place in Mustang Maneuvers
* 11th place in Trail
* 1st place in Compulsory Maneuvers!!
* 2nd place in Freestyle

This allowed us to finish as the
🏆 2025 Mustang Magic Champions!🏆

We are pleased to announce that Smidge has found a wonderful new owner in Texas.

Special Thanks:

We are incredibly grateful to our amazing
sponsors, who made this success possible:
• España Silk Products: For consistently keeping our horses looking and feeling their best. Their products ensured our horses were show-ready with that perfect shine. Not to mention the owner Trudy is incredibly kind and informative!
• Lucky K Equine: For maintaining our horses' feet in pristine condition and always prioritizing their well-being.

A heartfelt thank you to the many people who helped make this dream a reality:

• Rob Hughston: Thank you for offering to farm-sit, allowing my mom to join us. You took exceptional care of the ranch and tackled numerous projects while we were away. We’re also very grateful to Shelley for being willing to share you with us☺️ We love you both very dearly!
• Morgan (Intern): You were a true asset at the show, ensuring that the horses had everything they needed and maintaining the stalls to perfection. We couldn’t have asked for a better intern!
• Michele Hofmaier (my mom): None of this would be possible without your unwavering support. From sewing costumes to prepping horses, setting up props, and running errands, you were always there. Your presence as “the show mom” was invaluable.

To everyone who encouraged, cheered, and assisted us along the way, we sincerely appreciate you. A special thanks to the team who helped with Amber’s freestyle—you all were amazing!

It truly takes a village, and we are so grateful to be part of such a wonderful and supportive community!💕
