For our 3 Days of Giving Year-End Campaign, we are highlighting stories of our horses and students! See our 2nd story on our lovely Draft horses!

Who doesn’t love our big, clunky, slow moving, furry draft horse friends?! They have become a large part of RAD’s programming in the last few years. Our draft horses helped serve 1,358 sessions this year, we are so proud of these horses who’s origin stories are as unique as the horses themselves.

Canela came to us from a loving family but prior to that had been at a junk yard! We don’t know any of the details about that situation but often wonder what put her in that place and what her life entailed. Draft horses often do not get the same retirements and after-care as the thoroughbreds, so it is important to be advocating for them as well!

Leif came to us from Ramona. We know he did parades and was a cart horse previously. He has since been diagnosed with ringbone, a misshaped Navicular bone that can cause hoof pain if left untreated, and insulin resistance. We wish we knew his history; all his diagnoses came prior to his previous owner and have likely been with him for a while. To keep him comfortable Leif gets medications prescribed by our veterinarian and special “orthotic” horseshoes that are custom made by our farrier every 6 weeks. If you ever wonder what your donation is going towards, it’s cases like his. We are proud to have Leif in our program and to give him a job that is within his physical means.

Sven was living the green horse, supposed to be a pony horse, barn stall life at the track before RAD. Living his days eating cookies and once a month working. His connections loved him, he was well known in the entire back-stretch but also knew that isn’t the healthiest lifestyle for a horse. He came to us a smidge overweight and needing some life experience and training. This big guy was afraid of everything! Sounds anywhere around him, side walkers, people coming up to him quickly, all sensory items but was also kind, gentle and wanted to learn. It was discovered he had a broken coffin bone in his hind right hoof that never healed properly so he’s also on the custom shoe from our farrier list with medications to reduce inflammation around the coffin bone.

We know our focus is adaptive riding, we love what we do. But we do it because of our love of horses. RAD didn’t start out planning to take on difficult medical cases, but it’s organically happened. We’ve found that we love taking in horses that need a low impact job, helping them and giving them a purpose. We are strong believers that horses don’t want to stand around doing nothing. They love having a purpose and they also thrive when they connect with people. Horses and people have an unspoken link, a connection unlike any other. They can calm us, teach us, and show us how even little wins can happen with a broken or injured body or soul. And how we can soar, no matter our limitations when we allow ourselves to trust in another. Please consider making a year-end donation to these wonderful Draft’s! Thank you!

For our 3 Days of Giving Year End Campaign, we are highlighting stories of our horses and students! See our 1st story on our lovely Thoroughbreds!

Thanks to our horse sponsors, foundations, and local organizations RAD now has 7 Off the Track Thoroughbreds. Our 5 thoroughbreds helped give 1,846 sessions to our riders in 2025! Even though they have reputations for being “hot”, “spooky” and “too sensitive”; we’ve found that our thoroughbreds come from the track with more desensitization than most horses that enter our program to train for adaptive riding. Their natural curiosity, willingness to learn, work ethic, kindness and heart set them up to be excellent therapy horses.

King was the second off the track thoroughbred to enter our program. He was purchased straight off the track and came to RAD to train as a therapy horse. He was still racing and in race training at the time. King had some rehab needs; he had a chronic abscess in his left front foot that caused a crack in his hoof from the hairline to the ground. His hoof was held together with glue upon his arrival. We later found out that abscess was due to an old fracture in his right front coffin bone that didn’t heal properly. King had been racing with a broken foot and compensating with his left front causing extra pressure to build in that foot. He got custom built shoes and medication from the vet to help with inflammation and pain. King has now taught many RAD riders how to canter on their own and is an integral part of our program. His riders adore him, he is a horse that challenges his riders but also gives a huge sense of accomplishment and pride when they learn to work with him, as partners. For a horse that has been through so much, he loves his job and is making lives better every week.

Cass is one of our only thoroughbreds that didn’t come to RAD directly from the track. Although he did race, he wasn’t a fast one. He came with show experience and previously trained in eventing. Cass has arthritic hocks and kissing spine, both can be treated by our vet to keep him happy and comfortable. He gets various injections, and miso therapy. Cass loves having a job (he gets super excited when he gets to do Juno’s jumping lessons), cookies and friends to rub his forehead on. Cass will do any and all lesson types, from lead line riders that need a steady and calm horse, to tiny kids that want to ride the “big” horse, to teaching RAD riders to jump. His happy face makes everyone smile and he frequently enjoys sniffing young riders’ heads.

Remi came into the program from a connection at Las Alamitos racetrack. He’d had some down time before coming to RAD and was looking for his second career. Remi’s gentle and kind nature allowed him to slide right into lead line lessons, he is happy with all levels of riders and has taken lessons that require either a very quiet horse, or a strong level of support. It’s not uncommon that once a rider works with Remi, they don’t want any other horses. He is great for fearful riders that are struggling with confidence. He will lend them his, slow calm confidence allowing them to feel they are safe and can accomplish anything. He’s recently begun doing more independent riders, throwing in some cross rails for fun and is thoroughly enjoying the variety.

RAD’s thoroughbreds take on a variety of lessons, showcasing their versatility and adaptability. When you see Noah’s face light up as he canters King around the arena working towards his goal of “galloping”, you see the connection. When Cass walks so slowly with Jeremy, you see the confidence soar as the big horse kindly listens to his rider making him feel like he can tackle any obstacle. When you hear that Andrew only wants Remi and how he misses him when he had to ride another horse, you realize the relationship that these horses are building with their riders. Please consider making a year-end donation to these wonderful OTTB’s! Thank you!

On December 4th, we lost two RAD horses.

Liberty was often the first horse new riders worked with. Her kind, gentle nature made her the perfect first horse. She was lucky to have the same owner her entire life, who was there with her when she passed. Liberty was a planned euthanasia due to her dropping weight, and despite efforts being made to get her to gain weight, she couldn't. After consulting with the vet to discuss all possibilities, her owner felt it was better to let her go on a good day than risk her declining further. Liberty was a special horse whose small hooves made a large impact, and we are fortunate to have worked with her. Our hearts go out to her owner, who shared her with us.

Misty was only with us for a short while but her influence at RAD was felt immediately when you met her. She was one of those horses that you could feel a connection with immediately. A week before we lost her, she began to show signs of discomfort, we began treatment for discomfort per the vet's recommendations. Five days later, she stopped eating. After an emergency vet visit at RAD for colic, she was taken to Helen Woodward Equine Hospital for further monitoring and fluids. There, they suspected it may be viral and recommended quarantine until test results came back. While there, she had bloodwork done, and when it came back, it was clear she had leukemia. This is extremely rare in horses and has no treatment. We had two vets run bloodwork through two different labs to confirm. Both vets agreed euthanasia was the only option for her. We were all heartbroken. Misty will be remembered and loved by everyone at RAD.

We ask that everyone continue to respect Allie's wishes in not contacting her directly about Misty. Please leave them here, so she can read them when she's ready.

Juliette riding our new OTTB Dr. Troutman from California Retirement Management Account (CARMA)! Dr. T has been a great addition to the independent riding team. We are so grateful to be advocates for Off the Track Thoroughbred's and giving them a 2nd chance at careers after racing. Dr. T spent a few months at an aftercare program rehabbing and training locally from the track.

CARMA's Executive Director thought he would be a great fit for therapeutic riding based on his calming nature and personalilty. We brought him in on trial about 2 months ago and he started his first lessons this past week. We are excited to see his continued progress into therapy life!

A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of attending Sycuan Casino Resort's Annual Holiday Gift Giving Ceremony. Every year, the Tribal Council and upper management get to select a charity of their choice to receive a large donation and attend their holiday celebration! We were so surprised and touched to receive a call that we had been nominated by Tribal Councilman Willie Tucker Jr to receive a holiday donation. We were completely caught off guard! He was drawn to our mission of helping peope with disabilities learn to horseback ride. It was a wonderful event with over 30 nonprofits joining, and we were honored to be selected this year. Thank you to Councilman Tucker, Lauren M, and all of Sycuan for your generosity and community support. We can't thank you enough!

Thank you to the Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo for their grant donation of a medical horse sponsorship! Horse sponsorship helps keep our horse care up and our riding fees low for students.

On July 25, 1978, their Club founded the Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club Foundation, Inc. (RBRCF), a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. RBRCF embodies the spirit of Rotary’s “Service Above Self”, by enhancing humanitarian benefits in the area designated for the Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club. The Foundation will offer Club members and others, opportunities and inspiration for participating in its mission fulfillment and will strive to improve the quality of life in the club’s service area while providing satisfaction to the Rotary Club members in achieving this goal. Thank you for your continued support!

Meet the last of our 4 new ponies, Maximus! Named after the horse in Tangled, Max is a 5-year-old, 15-hand paint (we think) that came from an owner in Arizona. Despite spending thousands in training to try to get Max to speed up under saddle, he prefers the slow path. He was recommended for placement in an adaptive riding program. Max has had both arena training and trail experience. He is unfazed by most things and is thoroughly enjoying all of the attention he is getting. He loves people and smelling people's hair! We are hopeful Max will make a great lead line and independent horse. Welcome Maximus!

Give from the heart ❤️ and take from the tree 🌲! Our annual Giving Tree is back at the ranch for 2025 and will be up for the holiday season. Students, volunteers, parents, and guests can pick an item of need from the tree and donate it to RAD. Stop by the ranch and come check it out! Items are super affordable, starting at just $10. Wishes range from shavings and manure forks to rakes, helmets, and office supplies, and more! Mars and our awesome volunteers were the perfect models to demonstrate our Giving Tree at the ranch! We appreciate everyone's support!

Thank you to Supervisor Joel Anderson for hosting District 2 at his Holiday Open House! Supervisor Anderson has been a strong supporter of RAD, and we're grateful to impact our community together and serve residents of D2. Supervisor Anderson recently awarded RAD a $10,000 grant to hire more riding instructors and support employee salaries, promoting jobs within District 2! Thank you so much to the Supervisor and his entire team of staff and interns who work hard to support the community. We appreciate all you do.
