Here are some more behind-the-scenes snippets from our Kitten Spay & Neuter day with happylifeanimalrescue this past week! These clips are just some parts of what it looks like shaving and prepping animals for surgery! And yes, they do often keep their eyes open while sedated 😳😳 Hence the need for proper eye lubrication to avoid their little eyes drying out 🙈

Happy 4th of July, to all of our pet parents who are celebrating today! 🎆🎇🥳

Today can be a difficult day for some pups, given the loud and potentially confusing fireworks outside! Here are some tips and tricks for keeping your family friend calm during the fesitivies.

Remember, nothing is wrong with offering your furry friend a “chill pill” if you know that a potentially frightening or stressful event is going to occur! We are more than willing to prescribe your pups with “as needed” anxiety medication, as long as they have received a recent examination with us and are deemed physically healthy enough for specific medications!

We wish a fun and peaceful evening for all of our patients and their parents! 🐾

1, 2, 3, you’re falling in love with me! 🪄✨

This little trio from happylifeanimalrescue is all from the same litter, despite having such diverse colorations! They were rescued from out-of-state, and brought into us for spays and neuters. They are soon to be up for adoption!

Rox was hoisted up nice and proper, helping dad pay his bill when he left. Hopefully next time he’ll throw in some money towards it 👀🤣

It’s quite funny seeing a pup unmoving in a bag like this, perfectly positioned on the counter - defenitely not something you see everyday!

Rox is an interesting case - he has endocrine alopecia, meaning he has hormone-related hair loss. He comes in regularly to get melatonin implants, which help with his hair regrowth. These implants are believed to work by directly affecting hair follicles, prolonging the growth phase, and delaying the shedding phase.

Rox had a bald spot on the back of his neck during his appointment. We are hoping now that his implant has been replaced, he will be nice and fluffy again soon!

Donut E-Collar vs. Traditional Cone: Why the Squishy Option Wins! 🍩💖

When your furry friend needs a little recovery time, choosing the right e-collar makes all the difference! While the traditional plastic cone has its place, the donut e-collar is a great option for spay and neuter procedures, and here's why:

Benefits of the Donut E-Collar:

Comfort is Key! Unlike rigid plastic, donut collars are soft, squishy, and much more comfortable for your pet to wear 24/7. Less stress for them, more peace of mind for you!

Freedom to See & Hear: Traditional cones often obstruct vision and muffle sounds, which can be disorienting. Donut collars allow for much better peripheral vision and hearing, keeping your pet more aware of their surroundings.

Eat, Drink, and Be Merry (Easier!): No more struggling to reach food and water bowls! The compact design of the donut collar means easier access to meals and drinks, promoting a smoother recovery.

Less Bumping & Bruising: Say goodbye to scuffed furniture and bruised shins! Donut collars are less cumbersome, reducing the chances of your pet bumping into things (or you!).

Cuddle-Friendly: Want to snuggle with your recovering pup? The soft donut collar makes close contact much more enjoyable for both of you.
While the plastic cone is effective for certain situations, for overall comfort and ease during recovery, the donut e-collar is often the top choice!

Some more curious kittens came in today to get spays and neuters, and this grey gang was ready to get on the move!

The grey kittens and the cream-colored baby are from Happy Life Animal Rescue, and the two babies in the last photo are from Second Hand Siamese Pet Rescue - CT!

With all of the rescues that come into us, we have been booking up fast, and our surgery days have been jam-packed! We will only be seeing non-surgical patients on Thursdays. Tuesdays are reserved for pre-surgical appointments ONLY. Drop-offs may be allowed on some Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, but not for the next few weeks, since we are surgery slammed!

Thinking about adding a furry friend to your family? Please consider adopting from a rescue! Every year, countless deserving animals end up in shelters through no fault of their own. When you adopt, you're not just getting a pet; you're giving a second chance, opening up a space for another animal in need, and saying no to puppy and kitten mills. Plus, rescue organizations often provide medical care, behavioral assessments, and even foster homes, so you get a better idea of your new companion's personality. Save a life – adopt, don't shop! ❤️

If you are interested in adopting any of the rescue pets in our posts, please contact the tagged rescues directly!

Look at this absolutely perfect (fur-fect) pair! These two marshmallows came in for annuals and vaccines, and they absolutely stole the show! These beauties did amazing for their vaccinations, and a plan was set up for them to get their next distempers in 3-4 weeks, along with their rabies vaccines!

At only two months old, these guys were scheduled to wait for the rabies vaccine. Puppies generally receive their first rabies shot between 12 and 16 weeks of age. A booster shot is usually required one year later, and then again every 3 years.

For distemper and parvovirus, the vaccine is given once, and then given again 3-4 weeks later, and then again 3-4 weeks after that. After this point, the pup should be 4-5 months old, and then the distemper is vaccine is good for 1 year.

Set up an appointment today, and we can discuss a specific vaccination plan that is right for your pup!

Do you remember this boy? He came in for another nail trim, and stole our hearts again! We will never get enough of this face! 😋

Did you know that keeping your furry friend's nails trimmed is more than just a cosmetic thing? Regular nail trims are super important for their health and well-being! 🐾

Overgrown nails can actually cause a bunch of problems for your pup:

Pain and Discomfort: Long nails can press uncomfortably into the paw pads, making it painful for them to walk or run. Imagine walking around in shoes that are way too tight – ouch!

Abnormal Gait and Posture: To avoid the pain, dogs might start walking in an unnatural way, which can put strain on their joints and lead to other musculoskeletal issues down the road.

Risk of Injury: Overgrown nails are more likely to get snagged on things, leading to painful tears or even infections.

Damage to Furniture and Floors: Let's be real, long nails can do a number on your lovely floors and furniture! 😬

Ingrown Nails: If left untrimmed, nails can curl back and grow into the paw pads, which is seriously painful and can require veterinary attention.

So, make nail trims a regular part of your dog's grooming routine! It's a small thing that makes a big difference in their comfort and overall health. ❤️

This tiny little pocket pup stopped by suddenly for some puppy vaccines and a wellness exam. And while we can’t always accept walk-ins, we luckily happened to be available that day! Plus, this face was just too adorable to resist!

Puppy vaccine plans can be complicated, and often include several boosters, especially for distemper and parvovirus! When you bring your pup in for vaccines, we always set up a plan with you for when the next booster is, to ensure the safest protections for your pet!

Puppies need a series of distemper vaccines, typically 3 given a few weeks apart, for a few important reasons!

Maternal Antibodies: When puppies are born, they receive antibodies from their mother through the placenta and their mother's milk (colostrum). These maternal antibodies provide temporary protection against diseases, including distemper. However, these antibodies gradually decrease over time.

The presence of maternal antibodies can also interfere with a puppy's ability to develop its own immunity in response to a vaccine. If a puppy is vaccinated while maternal antibodies are still high, the antibodies can neutralize the vaccine, making it ineffective.

The rate at which maternal antibodies decline varies significantly between individual puppies. It's impossible to know precisely when a puppy's maternal antibodies will have decreased enough for a single vaccine dose to be fully effective.

By giving a series of vaccinations at 3-4 week intervals, veterinarians aim to provide protection as soon as the maternal antibodies have waned sufficiently in each individual puppy.

Please give us a call if you have any questions, or if you wish to schedule a new puppy appointment! 🐾
