The response to a proposed class at Orchard Hills Training Center in Barto was very positive. As a result, I am happy to announce that registration is oficially open for a Ring Prep class on Mondays from 1 to 2:30, and a Performance Puppy class from 3 to 4. Class is $225 for each 8 week session.

Ring Prep is for dogs who know each of the excersises from Novice, Open, and Utility who are ready to compete or who are actively competing. This class will focus on proofing each excersize for improved ring performance.

Performance Puppy is for puppies and dogs who do NOT know the excersises. This class starts from the very beginning and teaches each skill step by step. It is a 56 week program that will take you and your puppy/dog all the way through Utility skills. At the end of the 56 weeks, you will be ready to go into Ring Prep to prepare for trialing. We will also go over the rules and ring procedures for each level.

I am taking names and reservations for these classes starting now. Please reach out either through Facebook, email ([email protected]) text or voicemail (484-889-6050).

I'm making this post to check for interest in a Competition Obedience class in Barto at Orchard Hills Training Center on Mondays between 1 and 4 pm. I'd like to start the class in early March when the weather is a little better. I'd like to hold a Ring Prep class from 1 to 2:30, and a Puppy Performance class (for any age dog who has NOT learned all of the excersises in each obedience class) from 3 to 4. Please let me know through Facebook messenger, or by calling/texting at 484-889-6050 if you are interested and in which class.

It's sounds simple, right? Take your dog for a walk and drink your coffee. If you try it, and you or your dog ends up covered in coffee, call me.

This is why I do what I do, how I do it. Mimi went through a program with Anne Paul and knew all the skills and excersizes through Uitilty. She wanted "just" a UD. When we were in class together, I told her so many times to push her dog, but she was always afraid to break her. When I took over Anne's program, Mimi joined my ring prep class. Callie has become a very nice working dog, but Mimi struggled to put the pieces all together. Today, Callie got a bumper leg after getting her UD AND got some OTCH points.

I do pressure the dogs in class. I over proof and over train and push handlers out of their comfort zone. And now, Team Callie who "just" wanted a UD is going to go for UDX legs.

I am THRILLED for this team. You two have come so far and I'm so glad I get to be a small part of it. Onward and upward!!!

Yes, little dogs need training. No, it's never too early to start. Enola had her first lesson with me where we talked about leash pressure, house training, and APPRORIATE socialization. Enola is a 13 week old shih tzu/bichon mix who should only weigh about 12 pounds when she is grown up. Just because she's little doesn't mean she can get away with bad behavior.

During her lesson, we also talked about using a collar versus a harness and a set length leash versus the pink retractable leash they were using. I sent her owner to the pet store with a shopping list that also included an elevated bed and a more sturdy crate than what they were using.

Enola has been with her family for about 3 weeks and mom mentioned to me that she thought she had "messed up" already. Listen, training puppies is HARD and takes a lot of thought and effort. You can only mess things up if you don't ask for help. Like my teachers used to say, "the only stupid question is the one you don't ask." I've been training dogs for over 25 years, I've heard and seen a LOT and this little puppy is by no means ruined. And, most importantly, mom realized she was in a little over her head and reached out for help.

Spaces still open for the next beginner competition class which starts on March 23 at 3:00 p.m. Obedience can help in any sport you wish to pursue. This program takes every skill needed for competitive obedience and breaks it down step by step in a 56 week program. The program is designed for puppies 8 weeks and older who have little to know formal introduction to AKC Obedience, but is also open to dogs of any age. By the end of the program, you and your dog will know all exercises required for Novice, Open, and Utility obedience, as well as being more prepared for any other venue. Many dogs excell in agility, confirmation, flyball, and just day to day life because of what they learn in obedience class.

Please register by either emailing [email protected] or by texting me at 484-889-6050.

This is a good illustration of puppy socialization needs, shared from Good as Gold Training, but I would also add that all of the listed exposure and experience needs to feel *safe* for the puppy. If s/he is nervous, tentative, or fearful the fear should be handled by backing off a little and reintroducing very slowly and with lots of praise, food and patience. Sometimes, for the sake of "socialization", owners push their puppies too far and too fast, and it can backfire. Good socialization requires that we "read" our puppies and help them feel safe as they navigate the sounds, textures, people and animals in their new world.

I can not stress enough the importance of early and correct socialization. Miss Zoey is 7 months old and has spent about as much time with me as she has with her moms. So when I had to make a cross country trip while her moms went on vacation, Zoey got to come with me. None of us knew that trip would include a flat tire in the middle of the night and a hotel stay and then a trip to the tire store. Zoey has handled everything in stride including the noises of the tire shop and being walked around by strangers somewhere she has never been. All the guys have commented on how well behaved she was and how they wished their dogs were that good.

Zoey was also the first of my puppies to go through my month long remote collar training program. So she is completely off leash reliable in any environment. Having your puppy raised by a dog trainer, while hard, has been the best decision for this busy family of two working professionals and two small children.

Let's talk about dogs and muzzles. I am a firm believer that EVERY dog should know how to wear a muzzle. He may never need one in his whole life, but I never want the first time my dogs see something that can be as scary as a muzzle to be when there is some kind of medical emergency that necessitates wearing one. Beignet, Benni, went to the chiropractor for the first time last week. Now, Benni is the nicest poodle you will ever meet. He doesn't have a mean bone in his body and wouldn't even know how to bite a person. But, his owner knew that going to the chiropractor would be a whole new experience for him and since he has been in a little bit of pain, she decided it would be a good thing as a precaution to wear a muzzle. Because he is such a good boy, and had been exposed to one early in his puppyhood, wearing one while the new doctor did weird and unpleasant things to him was no big deal.

We as owners need to expose our puppies and dogs to as many different experiences as we can in as controlled of an environment as we can. Wearing a muzzle is one of those things that a lot of people never think about until the day they need it.
