Out in the sandhills of Nebraska, a farm dog rides along for 15 years, and a dog like that leaves a hole. When the old dog goes, plenty of men out there won't get another one. They say it's the cost of the food, or that they don't want to leave a dog behind.
Lyman has run the feed store in town for 46 years. He's 79 and still unloads the trucks himself. Two winters ago he noticed how many of his regulars were coming in for coffee and not buying any dog food anymore.
So he painted a sign on a piece of plywood and leaned it against the front of the store. Adopt an old dog from the county shelter, and the store gives you a bag of dog food, 50 pounds, every month for the rest of that dog's life.
His wife, Bernadette, did the math at the kitchen table that night and told him he'd lost his mind. He said he'd been selling feed long enough to know what a bag costs.
The first one to try it was a man named Dewey, 72, who'd buried his border collie in March and hadn't said 10 words at the counter since. He came back from the shelter with a yellow mutt nobody could put a breed to. The dog had been there 15 months. Dewey named the dog Gravel, after the road home. The next week he brought Gravel into the store to show Lyman, and Gravel stole a rawhide off the counter display.
After that it went from pickup to pickup. A widower took a gray heeler mix that kept trying to herd the shelter cats. There was a couple in their 80s who took two old black Labs so neither dog would be alone. One retired rancher drove 60 miles to the store just to ask if the sign was real.
It's been two years. As of this fall, 83 old dogs have ridden home from that shelter in somebody's pickup with a free bag of feed waiting. The store's dog food bill runs about $2,000 a month now. Lyman says the coffee customers have started buying their cattle mineral from him again, so it about evens out.
On the first Saturday of every month there's a line of pickups backed up to the loading dock by eight o'clock. Lyman swings the bags down onto the tailgates himself. Gravel always stands up in the bed of Dewey's truck to sniff the new one before it even lands.
