PATIENT EXPERIENCE - Pashie’s Story:

I’ve been a dental hygienist for almost 19 years. Nearly half my life. This is a special reminder that your sweet dogs need to have routine veterinarian check ups and oral exams/dental cleanings. We rescued sweet Pashie in May. She had to have emergency surgery within the first few weeks (neglected is an understatement). As an RDH, I was concerned about the visible calculus build-up and obvious gum disease but we were waiting for her to get stronger before putting her under anesthesia again to evaluate her dentition.

We thought she had a respiratory infection these last 4 weeks but it was more than that. After weeks of chronic coughing and eventual bloody sneezes (which I informed her vet of) - I made the choice to have her teeth “cleaned.” After years in this field you just know even when someone says, “it doesn’t look that bad.” If you are an RDH… YOU KNOW WHAT CAN’T always be seen!

I recievd a call mid procedure that made my stomach turn… her dental disease was so severe the infection had spread into her maxillary sinus. Multiple abscessed teeth, furcation involvement, & mobility after calc debridement, etc. To say she had been suffering doesn’t even come close to describing her pain. 😞

Pashie had to have multiple extractions to save her life yet again. We had a good veterinarian in AK but the true hero in this story is Dr. Lisa, who walked us through this process and saved her life yet again. 🙏🏻

Periodontal disease doesn’t necessarily hurt (rarely does until it’s too late). It can silently take your best friend’s life. 🐶 Dental infections are nothing to mess around with. Smaller dogs are more susceptible. Please make sure you take your pet in for their dental exam. 🦷 Just like heart disease, 💛 gum disease can be a silent killer.

We are so blessed to have Pashie. She is getting stronger everyday! The fight in her is beyond precious, and we are starting to see that sparkle ✨ reappear in her expression. 🥹
Her prognosis is great. 💕

This Dog had a fracture on it's front leg that healed improperly and created nerve damage that left it paralyzed. The Acupuncture he received as part of his treatment relaxed him so much he had fallen asleep in that picture where he's laying on his back with his mouth wide open. I feel like we could all use a little help relaxing these days. Dr. Silk used her skills to have him walking again in no time! (Published by Lisa Nelson)
