Public Speaking/Communication is one of the most valuable skills you can develop in any career. Yes, even dog training. "But I got into dog training because I'm not good with people." Well, dogs are walked, fed, handled, owned by SOMEONE, so your reasoning is flawed and, ultimately, detrimental to your success.

Strong public speaking skills separate good dog trainers from great ones. It separates a $30,000 month in sales from a $300,000 month in sales. It separates unsafe from safe.

So, how can we do it better? Just like any other skill, it requires mastering systems and techniques.

Let's take this opening I gave to the Off Leash K9 franchise meeting in Virginia last month. This was not rehearsed, no note cards, no power point. Just a solid system being applied to a new audience.

What system exactly? Let's break it down.

1) Say what you're going to say with confidence, even if you're stressed. Funnel the stress into passion. (If you're not confident in your words, why would anyone else be?)

2) Show vulnerability. No one wants to listen to an arrogant jerk for 2 hours. Vulnerability allows the audience to connect with you on a human level and feel empowered by your confidence, rather than defeated. (Vulnerability should be audience appropriate. You wouldn't discuss your mother's death and your subsequent battles with su***de in front of Mrs. Finley's 1st grade class.)

3) Create opportunities for the audience to engage with you. No one wants to be talked AT, but rather, talked TO. (This engagement should also be audience appropriate. You wouldn't ask the folks at the retirement home to call out the names of the best death metal bands of 2025.)

4) Use humor, especially during more serious topics, to set the audience at ease. This is the final ice breaker and leveler between speaker and audience. (Remember, again, audience appropriate. You wouldn't crack jokes about parenting to a room full of couples struggling to conceive.)

This is an excellent system for any opening, wether the talk is 1 hour long or 3 days long.

Is there a system for the actual meat and potatoes portion of public speaking? Yep.

What about the ending? You bet.

Do we teach this in our dog trainer certification programs? Absolutely. We want our students to have the highest level of success.

Our Story

Method K9, LLC started in the summer of 2017 in an effort to clarify dog behavior for the everyday dog owner. Method K9 believes that proper communication is the basis for success with any behavior, whether simple or severe. They work with all breeds, all sizes, all problems, and hold a special place in their heart for dogs in the shelter and rescue system in need of homes.

Stephanie Vichinsky, owner and head trainer, is one of the leading dog behavior specialists in the Inland Northwest. She started her journey at a very young age with a strong passion for animals. She worked with her family dogs and realized she had a special connection with the animals. After high school, she knew she wanted to work with dogs on a larger scale and undertook the task of studying to be a professional trainer.

After having worked as the head trainer for a number of large facilities, Stephanie quickly became known as a trainer with a unique training style that made sense of even the most complex behaviors. She has successfully rehabilitated thousands of dogs in her career.
