Acupuncture involves the insertion of thin sterile needles into discrete and specific points on the body in order to cause a therapeutic effect, but may include other methods such as electrical stimulation, aqua-puncture and moxibustion. In this video we are demonstrating a dry needle acupuncture treatment.
The point on the body is called βShu-xueβ or acupuncture point (acupoint).
The ancient Chinese discovered 361 acupoints in humans and 173 acupoints in animals. Acupuncture has been practiced in both animal and humans for thousands of years in China.
Modern research shows that acupoints are located in areas where there are a high density of free nerve endings, mast cells, small arterioles and lymphatic vessels. Most acupoints are motor points.
Stimulation of acupoints induces the release of beta-endorphins, serotonin, and other neurotransmitters.
βDe Qiβ is a term used in TCVM to describe the sensations experienced during an acupuncture treatment and is known as βarrival of Qi.β It refers to a specific feeling of movement, tingling, heaviness or soreness that occurs when the acupuncture needles are inserted into acupoints along the body.
De Qi is considered an essential component of acupuncture therapy. It is believed the presence of De Qi indicates that the needles have stimulated the appropriate acupoints and that the treatment is working effectively. This reaction contributes to the therapeutic benefits of acupuncture such as pain relief, improved circulation and relaxation.
If your pet has received an acupuncture treatment with Dr. Nolin, youβve probably heard her talk about the importance of De Qi and we tell every owner not to worry when their pet reacts to the needles! Itβs a good response!
Thanks, Finn, for helping demonstrate the De Qi response β― π
