Ducks go through 1-2 periods of moulting each year, and we’ve just entered our first moult of adult feathers. During this time our girls have a slightly bigger appetite, spend more time snoozing, often stop laying eggs, and of course drop their old feathers EVERYWHERE. Our backyard looks like there’s been a pillow fight 😆
When the new big girl feathers come in, they’re first known as “pin feathers” as modeled here by our Bella. These are super sensitive and even have their own blood supply, which can make them susceptible to lots of blood loss if a shaft gets broken or damaged. We give our girls extra snacks and limit handling them during this time until the new feathers are in.
