Every shelter pup deserves a birthday, and today we celebrate ALL of them. Whether they've found their forever home or are still waiting for theirs, today is THEIR day!

Meet Sundae and Peanut! Sundae came to me newly pregnant and ended up giving birth to 4 kittens. Sadly, 3 of the 4 babies didn’t make it😢 Peanut was the only kitten left and needless to say they are very bonded. Sundae has been spayed recently and is now ready to start finding her forever home, along with her baby girl Peanut. Just like us, pets need preventative care. Annual blood tests are one of the most important tools we have to keep your pet healthy and catch issues early.

Here's what we're checking:

🩸Complete Blood Count (CBC): Checks red & white blood cells, platelets. Detects infections, anemia, and clotting issues.

🩸Blood Chemistry Panel: Tests kidney function, liver health, blood sugar levels, and electrolytes. Catches early diabetes, kidney disease, and liver problems.

🩸 Thyroid Screening: Senior pets, especially thyroid issues, are common and very treatable once diagnosed.

Why it matters: Early detection = better outcomes + lower treatment costs. A seemingly healthy pet can have hidden issues that bloodwork reveals.

Originally from Romania and raised in Chicago, Dr. Costin earned her Bachelor of Science in Zoology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale before completing her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri. She has a special interest in feline medicine and senior pet care, and loves helping families navigate care for their aging pets.

When she's not in the clinic, you'll find her curled up with a good novel, gardening, or enjoying time outdoors.

Pools can help pets cool off, but they also come with important risks.

Chlorine and salt water can irritate skin, eyes, and stomach if swallowed. Dogs can easily become exhausted, experience temperature shock in cold water, or develop ear and skin infections from lingering moisture. Not all dogs are strong swimmers, so drowning is a real concern.

For safe pool use, always supervise closely, limit swim time to 15 to 20 minutes, offer frequent breaks, and provide fresh drinking water. Rinse your pet after swimming and dry their ears thoroughly to support pet wellness and prevent infections.

For a safer option, consider a shallow kiddie pool or sprinkler for cooling without the risks.
