Hiss & Hers Herp Hobbies

Hiss & Hers Herp Hobbies Offering quality pets and sharing enjoyment of reptiles as a hobby. Portland OR We have been breeding ball python morphs and other reptile pets since 2004.

We also share our pets with the community in an effort to help these animals be seen in a more positive light with an eye towards conservation and awareness. With all of the political agendas focused on regulating the reptile world, we hope that by reaching out and being advocates, we can provide a positive influence to the outcomes.

A young lady at the reptile show today came to my table wanting a california king snake. She had done "Tons Of Research!!!" lol. She said "I'm going to look at every single one here before I decide which one to get, but I really like yours". A couple hours later she was back, and wanted to buy one of the 2 male cal kings I had. So I took them both out, showed her how they acted, talked about their feeding and handling. She was so very excited. Then a while later she came back with this little drawing "I made this for you, thank you"...I'm not crying, you're crying 🥺 This, this is what fuels my passion and keeps me going on and on.

Finally made a sign...lol

Ok, here they are...be aware that a few of them are in pretty bad shape. They have all eaten now and are being treated for mites. They are getting extra boosts and daily TLC. I will do my best to keep folks updated on them. Will post if/when they become available.

They are officially in my custody now. 17 (well now 16 😞 ) severely neglected boas came to me a week ago. This beauty was the one in the murky brown water...along with 8 neonates that look like they were never fed (lost one of them the day after they arrived) and 8 that range from sub-adult to omg I can barely lift it!
Boas are one of my most favorite! Its going to be a while longer than 30 days for these guys as they are not only severly dehydrated, starved and neglected (layers of shed, live bite marks eyc.) but they are badly infested with mites. I will get pictures as I can, not sure if I will share them all...but I will keep y'all posted.

P.S. the previous batch of 4 ball pythons is now ready and will be at the show in Albany this weekend. If you had expressed interest and are local but won't make the show, let me know asap.

This makes me laugh every time...I ALWAYS bring more than balls.

**Edit** FYI I am the *original* Hiss&Hers located in Portland OR and have been so for 20 years and counting.
Just a few words about what I actually do...
I am a licensed transfer facility for Multnomah County Animal Services. I am NOT a "rescue"!!! To be a rescue in Oregon now involves licencing and inspection through the USDA because Uncle Sam needs his fingers in every pie! You can call yourself whatever you like, but my paperwork reads "transfer facility" I still have a licence and I still get inspected. But the hard part is what that also means is that I am NOT ALLOWED to take donations. So when you see me posting animals that have been transfered to me, they are being fed, housed and cared for on my dime and my time. Its just me, I don't have a horde of volunteers or people offering me food etc.

I do make stuff, check out my other page Funtopia Crafts. I'm going to try and make that a way to support the efforts I am putting in with the animals you see coming in under transfer.

Regarding animals transfered to me...I hold each and every one for a minimum of 30 days. To make sure they eat, they are healthy (no mites or obvious issues like MBD or RI) and that they are adoptable...no flipping here. I also don't ask unrealistic rehoming fees just because animals may be "fancy". Sometimes the animals I have come into my care haven't actually been transfered yet. Multco is not set up to properly care for more than maybe one or two snakes or lizards for a short time. They certainly aren't experienced enough to deal with over a dozen severely neglected, mite infested HUNGRY boas! Lol. And occasionally I get animals that are in protective custody that I don't even talk about as I am not allowed. Every animal transferred to me is a public record as well and yes, I have had some interesting experiences with that. Just know that if you show up at my place with ill intent it may not be the police waiting for you...hope you can tell the difference between a king snake and a cobra (lol)

I have suffered some devastating losses recently and seriously considered leaving the hobby. It takes an enormous amount of my time and energy to care for my own collection including breeding feeder rodents, let alone when I get a group of animals that require daily care. I also deal with an auto-immune disorder that causes constant pain and fatigue.

If you made it this far you are fu***ng awesome! Lol I'm still here too and still taking care of the animals I have spent over 20 years being passionate about. Thanks for coming along, see you at the show!

Python pit info

Boas and pythons possess a unique superpower—infrared-sensing pits that allow them to detect warm-blooded prey in complete darkness. But how did these heat-sensing innovations evolve, and what role do they play in snake ecology? A new study reveals that labial pits evolved multiple times and drove a strong preference for arboreal lifestyles and an endotherm-based diet. Surprisingly, they did not boost diversification rates, challenging traditional views on key innovations. These findings shed light on how sensory adaptations shape ecological niches, offering new insights into the evolution of one of nature’s most fascinating predators.
