**Edit** FYI I am the *original* Hiss&Hers located in Portland OR and have been so for 20 years and counting.
Just a few words about what I actually do...
I am a licensed transfer facility for Multnomah County Animal Services. I am NOT a "rescue"!!! To be a rescue in Oregon now involves licencing and inspection through the USDA because Uncle Sam needs his fingers in every pie! You can call yourself whatever you like, but my paperwork reads "transfer facility" I still have a licence and I still get inspected. But the hard part is what that also means is that I am NOT ALLOWED to take donations. So when you see me posting animals that have been transfered to me, they are being fed, housed and cared for on my dime and my time. Its just me, I don't have a horde of volunteers or people offering me food etc.
I do make stuff, check out my other page Funtopia Crafts. I'm going to try and make that a way to support the efforts I am putting in with the animals you see coming in under transfer.
Regarding animals transfered to me...I hold each and every one for a minimum of 30 days. To make sure they eat, they are healthy (no mites or obvious issues like MBD or RI) and that they are adoptable...no flipping here. I also don't ask unrealistic rehoming fees just because animals may be "fancy". Sometimes the animals I have come into my care haven't actually been transfered yet. Multco is not set up to properly care for more than maybe one or two snakes or lizards for a short time. They certainly aren't experienced enough to deal with over a dozen severely neglected, mite infested HUNGRY boas! Lol. And occasionally I get animals that are in protective custody that I don't even talk about as I am not allowed. Every animal transferred to me is a public record as well and yes, I have had some interesting experiences with that. Just know that if you show up at my place with ill intent it may not be the police waiting for you...hope you can tell the difference between a king snake and a cobra (lol)
I have suffered some devastating losses recently and seriously considered leaving the hobby. It takes an enormous amount of my time and energy to care for my own collection including breeding feeder rodents, let alone when I get a group of animals that require daily care. I also deal with an auto-immune disorder that causes constant pain and fatigue.
If you made it this far you are fu***ng awesome! Lol I'm still here too and still taking care of the animals I have spent over 20 years being passionate about. Thanks for coming along, see you at the show!
