Something I try to keep in my mind - you don’t know something till you either learn it or someone teaches you!
We tend to jump to conclusions that everyone knows what we know - sometimes they really don’t!!
While out picking up a foster cat for their appointment tomorrow, I walked around the property to check on the colony. When I got to the feeding station, a sweet orange cat rubbed up against my leg. When I reached down to pet him I stopped at the sight of the severe flea infestation he had. Thankfully the neighbor came over to say hi and we began to talk about his condition. I ended up spending two unexpected hours helping the neighbor bathe and flea-comb him to give him some relief.
The water turned red with dried blood. Dozens of fleas poured off his little body, and the family was horrified.
They didn’t know:
• A single flea can bite a cat up to 400 times a day
• Fleas start feeding within minutes and can feed for up to 2.5 hours
• One female flea lays up to 50 eggs a day
• The life cycle from egg to adult takes just 3–8 weeks
They just didn’t know.
And sometimes… you don’t know what you don’t know.
We talked about flea anemia. Prevention. Vaccines. Parasites. And what it really means to care for a cat and special care for those who also lives outdoors.
Because rescue isn’t just about saving the homeless—it’s helping people do better for the pets they already love. 💔
And today, that meant stopping to help one itchy, hurting cat—and a family who was ready to learn. 🐈⬛
