We’re hearing this more and more. “ just shoot them”. Like they aren’t living, breathing, feeling animals!
Makes me sick to my stomach to think that these ACO’s are recommending and doing this!
And that they are not prosecuted. And removed from their positions.
I was told today that some people think it's ok to shoot stray and feral cats on their property.
Let me be perfectly clear: this is absolutely NOT okay.
It is abhorrent, heartbreaking, and shameful.
I have also learned that some animal control officers in our state are telling people to shoot cats on their property. (Thankfully, none of the local ACOs I work with condone this.) But this mindset is dangerous and wrong. Shooting an animal simply for existing and trying to survive is not humane.
These cats have already been failed by humans. Their homelessness is not their fault. If you can’t help them, at the very least, don’t harm them.
👉 Intentional harm or killing of feral or stray cats is a criminal offense in all 50 states and the District of Columbia—regardless of ownership status.
There are proper, humane alternatives, including TNVR programs and rescue groups that specialize in feral cat management. Cruelty is never the answer.
And let me be very clear in my role as an ACO:
If I receive credible proof that someone is intentionally harming or killing cats, I will formally charge them with animal cruelty.
It is shameful that there are ACOs out there encouraging this behavior instead of doing their job—helping their communities find humane, legal resources to deal with stray and feral cats.
This entire problem was created by people, and you’re not going to “fix” it by shooting innocent animals who are just trying to survive.
The real solution is simple: spay and neuter your pets.
If you have an intact cat and you allow it to roam outside, you are directly contributing to the heartbreaking crisis rescuers and responsible ACOs face every single day.
Do better. For them.
