Demodectic mange is a condition caused by a type of parasitic mite (Demodex) that can live under the surface of the skin or in the hair follicles of dogs. Diagnosis requires a skin scrape to rule out other causes of mange, such as scabies.
Demodex mites can sometimes be harmless and are not contagious to humans or other pets, but for dogs with weakened or immature immune systems (AKA sweet puppies like Mabel, or sometimes elderly dogs) the mites can multiply too rapidly. While rarely itchy (unlike scabies), demodectic mange can cause hair loss and inflammation. Treatment may include topical medication or a combination of oral and topical medication for severe cases. With appropriate treatment, prognosis is good and we expect Mabel to make a full recovery — although she’s perfect either way. 🐾
