Cloven Hoof

Cloven Hoof Professional hoof trimming for your pot bellied pig, goat, or sheep. Pigs need to walk on their hooves.

Maintaining your pig's or goat's hooves is vital for their conformation and helps to prevent arthritis later in life. Here's how it works: Tendons attaching from the elbow down through the long pastern, short pastern and to the coffin bone come under tension when the animal walks with it's heels too close to the ground. The constant tension pulls on the elbow joint causing a gap which is then fil

led in by bone calcification. Calcification is what happens when the bone tries to repair itself by depositing calcified boney fragments into open spaces. However, calicification deposits are not smooth nor easy for tendons to slide against, causing pain in the joint (arthritis), combined with pain along the leg from the over-stretched tendon. Eventually, joints can fuse together; and many elderly pigs' lives are cut short by elbow and hip dysplasia. Due to their domesticity and the nature of the soft, damp soil here in the Pacific Northwest, they are unable to wear their hooves down naturally and need assistance.

Jeffrey Jensen was sorely neglected for five years. consequently, his tusks had grown so that one was piercing his face with almost 3” of tusk in his flesh! The other tusk had grown in his mouth and was heading to the back of his throat! We had a good and compassionate team assembled and we’re ready for anything.
So many successes today. ❤️

I love these guys. They still want some love after their hooves are all done.

Looks at this gorgeous sweetie! Pigs are so smart, even when they're named something like 'Porkchop'.

Have you heard of "forking"?
I hadn't until last year when a new client told me she could get her pig to lie down by "forking" her. Of course, I thought this was a regional colloquialism, but nope! When I got there, the client pulled out an old kitchen fork and started poking her pig's back with it.
Lo and behold! That pig rolled right over!

I only mention this because (well, apparently it's well-known in the mini-pig world. Who knew) I went out to trim Miss Daisy's hooves this past weekend. I had never met Daisy before and Daisy's new owner told me ahead of time that Daisy was aggressive - she not only lunges, but she bites! Yikes! So I got my pig board and headed on out. We tried and tried and tried to flip that girl, but she is young and strong and we couldn't do it!
Then as a last resort, I asked for the fork. And I kid you not, that mean, angry, abused, scared piggy rolled right over to show us her sweet side.

Forking Success!

A follow up message from the owner said that Daisy has not been aggressive since. The new owner is committed to rehabilitating Daisy and giving her the fur-ever home she needs and deserves.
Well, fork! 🐷💖

This page describes the euphoric "forking" that you've probably heard about. Similar to a belly rub, you use a fork to gently "pet" your pig which typically outs your pig in a trance like state.
