🚪 Door Manners Matter
One of the most overlooked skills in dog training is teaching proper door manners. 🚪🫷🏻
A doorway is a threshold, and dogs should never be allowed to rush through it without permission. ✋🏻Whether it’s the front door, car door, gate, or crate door, charging in and out creates excitement, impulsiveness, and can become a safety risk.
A dog that bolts through doors can run into traffic, knock people over, escape the home, or develop a habit of making decisions without looking to the owner for guidance. 😱
Teaching your dog to wait at thresholds builds impulse control, respect, focus, and leadership.
The goal isn’t just teaching a dog to sit at the door. ☝🏻
The goal is teaching the dog to pause, think, and wait for permission before moving forward.
Every doorway is an opportunity to reinforce structure and communication. 🚪🦮
Small daily habits like proper door manners create a safer, more balanced dog both inside and outside the home.
Does your dog wait for permission at the door, or do they make the decision for you?
