🎆 New Year’s Eve & Your Dog: Firework Safety Tips 🐾

From all of us at 386 K9 — Mastering Control. Unleashing Potential.

Fireworks can be exciting for us, but they’re often stressful and overwhelming for our dogs. Here are some simple, effective tips to help keep your pup calm and safe as we ring in the New Year:

🐶 How to Help Your Dog Tonight:
• Create a safe space – A quiet room or crate with familiar bedding helps dogs feel secure.
• Keep them indoors – Even well-trained dogs can panic and bolt when fireworks go off.
• Add background noise – TV, white noise, or calming music can help mask the sound.
• Stay calm yourself – Your energy matters. Calm, confident leadership helps dogs regulate.
• Exercise earlier in the day – A physically and mentally fulfilled dog is more relaxed at night.
• Use calming tools if needed – Anxiety wraps, enrichment toys, or vet-approved calming aids can help.

⚠️ Avoid: forcing comfort, punishment, or leaving dogs outside unattended.

As we head into the New Year, our goal remains the same — helping dogs and owners build calm, confident relationships through structure, clarity, and trust.

🎉 From our 386 K9 family to yours, Happy New Year!
Here’s to a safe night and a strong year of training ahead.

If your dog struggles with anxiety, reactivity, or confidence, reach out — we’re here to help. 🐕💪

🍁🐾 THANKSGIVING SAFETY TIPS FOR DOG OWNERS 🐾🍁
From your friends at 386 K9

As we celebrate Thanksgiving, let’s make sure our pups stay safe around all the holiday food and excitement. Here are a few important tips 👇

✔️ Foods that are typically safe (in small, plain portions):
• Plain cooked turkey meat (no bones, no seasoning)
• Plain veggies like green beans, peas, or potatoes
• Pumpkin (plain — not pie mix)

❌ Foods to keep away from your dog:
• Turkey bones, skin, stuffing, gravy
• Foods with butter, cream, spices, onions or garlic
• Rich or fatty foods
• Chocolate, desserts, candy (no xylitol!)
• Alcohol and raw dough

🐶 Extra Safety Tips:
• Keep trash and leftovers secured
• Remind guests not to share table scraps
• Provide a calm spot or crate if your dog gets overwhelmed
• Try to keep walks, feeding & potty breaks on schedule

👉 If you’re unsure about a food — it’s safer to say NO. The best way to include your dog in the holiday is keeping them healthy and stress-free!

🇺🇸 Happy Veterans Day! 🇺🇸

Today, we honor all who have served — the brave men and women who’ve worn the uniform, and let’s not forget our Military Working Dogs (MWDs) who’ve stood beside them on missions across the world. 🐾

A special salute to our partners at T. Harris K9, who continue to dedicate their time and expertise to training and supporting both veterans and working K9s.

And a heartfelt thank you to Corey Donato, owner of 386 K9 — U.S. Army Veteran, Afghanistan Campaign, and proud to have served in the Washington D.C. National Capitol Region.

Your service and continued dedication to the K9 community make a difference every day.

🚨 Dog Owners & Future Dog Owners – Please Read🚨

The amount of dog attacks in the last two weeks has been insane. At 386 K9, we cannot stress enough the importance of training your dog and truly knowing their behavior. Dog training is not just about obedience – it’s about safety, responsibility, and prevention.

Here are some important points to keep in mind:

✅ Know your dog’s triggers – Understand what situations make your dog anxious, fearful, or reactive.

✅ Proper socialization – Exposing your dog to people, environments, and other animals in the right way helps build confidence and reduce fear-based reactions.

✅ Leash control matters – Even friendly dogs need to be properly managed on a leash. An out-of-control dog can quickly escalate a situation.

✅ Teach reliable recall – Your dog coming back to you every time you call is one of the best safety tools you can have.

✅ Set boundaries at home – Structure, rules, and consistency create a stable environment that prevents behavioral issues.

✅ Invest in training early – Puppies and rescues benefit from training as soon as possible. Prevention is easier than fixing a dangerous behavior later.

✅ Take responsibility – At the end of the day, you are accountable for your dog’s actions. Proper training protects you, your dog, and the community.

💡 If you’ve been putting off training, now is the time. Don’t wait until a situation happens.
