Hello there, Dr Norris here with my special friend Jake from SnakeFarm! Since the weather is warming up, snakes are on the move. Black racers like Jake are super common, and they’re so beneficial to have around. Black racers are GREAT pest control, and they’re completely harmless to humans and pets. They even keep venomous snakes away!

What should you do if you see a snake in your yard? First, don’t panic! Second, make sure all pets and children are secured. Lastly, spray the little fella with some water, and it’ll be on its way. The old cliche holds true: they’re more scared of you than you are of them.

If there’s concern your pet was bitten by a venomous snake, here’s what you should do:

1. Take the collar off of your pet. Swelling around the neck and throat can quickly cause suffocation.

2. Wash the bite wound with soap and water.

3. Take a photo of the snake. Do NOT touch, kill, or attempt to catch the snake.

4. Go to the nearest vet as soon as possible.

5. If you live in a high risk area, know which vets are prepared for snake bite emergencies. Charlotte Animal Hospital keeps antivenin in stock in the event of venomous snake bite emergencies:

Prevent your pets from being bitten - keep cats indoors and keep dogs on leashes. Remove debris from your yard and consider snake aversion training for dogs.

Remember - snakes don’t want trouble. Let them be and they’ll let you be. Trust me, they don’t want any trouble.

Jake from SnakeFarm was released back to where he was found and will continue providing rodent protection for Charlotte Animal Hospital ♥️

Happy Veterinary Receptionist Week to the incredible faces (and voices!) of our hospital!

Amy, Hannah, Mo, Jeremy, Tati, & Ellen ❤️

Our CSR team does so much more than answer
phones and check in appointments — they are the calm in the chaos, the first smile our clients see, and the steady support our medical team relies on every single day.
They juggle emergencies, comfort worried pet parents, keep our days running smoothly, and somehow still manage to bring kindness and positivity to every interaction.
This week, we celebrate YOU — your compassion, your patience, your teamwork, and the heart you bring to everything you do. Our hospital simply wouldn’t function without you.
If you’ve had a great experience with our reception team, we’d love for you to drop them some love in the comments below! 👇
