Fleas are tiny external parasites that feast on blood for survival. Adult fleas bite within 3 minutes of jumping on a host. They start to lay eggs just 24 hours later.

How can you help lower your pet's chances of developing heart disease or catch it early?

Regular vet visits - After your pet's initial kitten/puppy visits, they should be seen once a year until the are seniors - then twice a year.

Year round preventions - One of the causes of heart disease is heartworms. Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes and have been seen all year round.

Healthy lifestyles - Overweight pets are more at risk for developing heart disease. Monitor their diet and treats and exercise them daily. Grain free diets have been linked to heart disease. Talk with your vet to see their feeding recommendations!

Heart disease has many causes. Some are congenital (they're born with it) and others are acquired (it develops later.) Certain breeds like Ragdolls, Maine C***s, Persians, and Sphinx for cats, and King Charles Cavalier and other small dogs are at higher risk for heart disease. Heartworms will also cause heart disease. Nutrition and lifestyle are factors for heart diseases as well.
