We’re a little more than 10 weeks away from our first-ever Benefit Concert on October 24th, and preparations are in full-swing. With the help of the great folks at Field Hall and members of the band, we’re working out logistical and technical details to ensure the best possible show.

Regarding the silent auction, which will be held in the Field Hall lobby prior to the concert, we’re accumulating an interesting and fun collection of items sure to excite and intrigue practically everyone in our community. So far, the auction items include:
• A day-long guided fly-fishing trip;
• A Weekend Getaway in Victoria, complete with round-trip ferry tickets, 2-nights lodging, and passes to Butchart Garden;
• A Year of Breakfasts at Oak Table Café;
• The Steel Wheels’ latest LP, signed by all the band members;
• A half-case of high-end red wines and a half-case of white/sparkling wines; and
• Many more great items!

Tickets are selling well, but there are plenty of good seats available. Get yours at: https://fieldhall.ludus.com/index.php?show_id=200488349.

We’ll keep checking in with you, our public, to let you know how preparations are progressing. In the meantime, enjoy the summer weather…and make sure to tell your family and friends about this Concert which will benefit the dogs and cats at OPHS.

Spay & Neuter = Healthier, Happier Pets!

Spaying and neutering your pets isn’t just about preventing litters, it’s about protecting their health and improving their behavior. Spaying females helps prevent uterine infections and breast cancer, especially when done before their first heat. Neutering males prevents testicular cancer and reduces prostate issues.

It can also make life at home easier! Spayed females won’t go into heat, and neutered males are less likely to roam, mark territory, or display unwanted behaviors like mounting. Plus, it’s far more affordable than caring for a litter or treating preventable health problems.

Contrary to myths, spaying or neutering won’t make your pet overweight. Diet and exercise matter more. And while it can help with hormone-driven behaviors, it’s not a cure-all for training issues.

Most pets can be safely fixed as early as 8 weeks old. Talk to your vet about the best timing for your pet, and help reduce pet overpopulation while giving your furry friend a healthier, happier life! 🐾💙

🌞🐾 Hot Weather = Hot Pets! Know the Signs of Heatstroke 🐶🐱

Summer is here, and while we love the sunshine, it can be dangerous for our furry friends! 🥵 Heatstroke in pets can sneak up fast, but knowing the signs can save lives.

🚨 Early Warning Signs:
Panting or noisy breathing
Restlessness or pacing
Drooling
Red gums or tongue
Fast heartbeat
Vomiting or diarrhea

⚠️ Advanced Signs:
Lethargy or confusion
Weakness or collapse
Seizures

💦 First Aid Tips:
Move your pet to a cool, shaded area or use a fan.
Offer small sips of water—don’t force it.
Use cool (not ice-cold) water to wet them down.
Use a fan or breeze to help with evaporative cooling.
Call your vet ASAP, even if they seem okay!

🐕‍🦺 Prevention is Best:
Always provide shade and fresh water.
Walk dogs early or late—avoid midday heat.
Never leave pets in cars or hot rooms.
Check pavement with your hand—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for paws!
Keep long-haired pets groomed.
Let’s keep our pets safe, cool, and happy this summer!

We just wanted to shout out the for all of the work they do for the local dog and cat owners in need of assistance in our community! We've been able to send our excess supply of dog and cat food with them on occasion, and these awesome individuals hauled bag after bag into the back of this truck! We're so grateful for everything that the Sequim Food Bank does, and that we were able to play a small part in the incredible work that they do! 🐶🐾🐱

🐾 Vaccinate to Protect: Why Your Pets Need Their Shots! 🐱

Vaccinations are one of the easiest and most effective ways to keep your pets healthy and safe from serious and often deadly diseases. Whether you’ve got a playful pup or a curious kitty, staying up to date on vaccines is essential! 🩺

🔹 Core Vaccines for Dogs:
Rabies: Fatal and contagious to humans, required by law in most areas.
Distemper: Affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems.
Parvovirus: Highly contagious and deadly, especially in puppies.
Adenovirus (Hepatitis): Causes liver damage and respiratory issues.

🔹 Core Vaccines for Cats:
Rabies: Just as important for cats as it is for dogs!
Feline Panleukopenia (Distemper): A severe and often fatal disease.
Feline Herpesvirus & Calicivirus: Major causes of upper respiratory infections.

💡 Non-Core (But Often Recommended) Vaccines:
Dogs: Bordetella (kennel cough), Leptospirosis, Lyme disease, Canine Influenza
Cats: Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV), especially for outdoor cats

🗓️ When to Vaccinate:
Puppies and kittens start vaccines at 6–8 weeks old
Boosters are given every 3–4 weeks until 16–20 weeks old
Adult pets need regular boosters, your vet will guide you!

✅ Why It Matters:
Protects your pet from painful, life-threatening diseases
Prevents the spread of illness to other animals and humans
Saves you from costly emergency vet visits
Let’s keep tails wagging and whiskers twitching, vaccinate your pets!

BARKHOUSE LEAK UPDATE 💧
We have officially received final invoices from RJ Services and Gary’s Plumbing, and they were able to complete this fix for a grand total of (drumroll please) $7,705!!! 😱
The amount of team work and problem solving that went into this fix between Gary’s Plumbing and RJ Services has been so heartwarming and genuinely shows the dedication these two companies had to not only getting the job done right, but getting it done in the most cost effective way possible! 🙌
We want to thank both of these businesses, and everyone who has donated thus far! 🫶
We’ve still got a ways to go until we meet our goal, but we count ourselves beyond lucky to be a part of a community that looks out for our furry friends! 🐾
Please share or donate if you can, every dollar helps! 🐶

An update on the Benefit Concert

Details for our Concert to benefit the dogs and cats at OPHS are falling into place! On the evening of October 24, 2025 The Steel Wheels, a nationally renowned Americana roots and folk-rock band, will perform at Field Arts & Events Hall in Port Angeles. Reserved tickets are available at the Field Hall website: https://fieldhall.ludus.com/200488349.

In conjunction with the concert, there’ll be a silent auction in the Field Hall lobby…all proceeds will support the day-to-day care of our cats and dogs. So far, we have a tasty selection of auction items, ranging from a one-day guided fly-fishing trip to 2 golf outings (one at the Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course and the other at Peninsula Golf Club) to a flight-seeing tour of the Peninsula and other items.

We’re focusing on auctioning experiences this year, so if you have a time-share in a fun place, high-profile sports or musical tickets, or similar experiences that you’re willing to donate, please contact us!

See you at the Concert!

Uh-Oh! The Barkhouse Water Leak is Back, It’s Worse Than Ever, and we need your help! 💧🐾

Our beloved Barkhouse is once again facing a serious water leak—this time with a vengeance. After months of patching and praying, the issue has returned and we can no longer delay a permanent fix.

We’ve received a quote from two generous local businesses, Gary’s Plumbing and RJ Services the repair will cost upwards of $10,000 to install a brand-new waterline that will finally solve this problem for good!

💔 If we do not get this fixed ASAP it will eventually impair our ability to properly care for the animals who rely on us every single day. This is a critical infrastructure project, and we’re reaching out to our community to help us make it happen.

🌟 How You Can Help: Please consider making a donation, no amount is too small. Every dollar brings us closer to clean, reliable water for our furry residents!

📲 Donate now at: https://www.op-hs.org/barkhouse-leak-campaign
📍 Or drop off a check at: 1743 Old Olympic Hwy Port Angeles, WA 98362

Let’s come together and make sure the Barkhouse stays safe, dry, and full of wagging tails. Thank you for always standing by us. ❤️🐶

🐱Is Your Cat Avoiding the Litter Box? Here’s What Might Be Going On!🐾

It can be frustrating when your cat suddenly stops using the litter box, but don’t worry, they’re not just being difficult! There are several reasons this might happen, and many are fixable with a little detective work and TLC.

Medical Matters First:
If your cat is consistently having accidents, it could be a sign of a health issue like a urinary tract infection, kidney disease, or diabetes. Always check with your vet first to rule out medical causes.

Litter Box Logistics:
Cats are picky! They may avoid the box if it’s dirty, too small, hard to reach, or in a noisy spot. Some cats dislike liners, scented litter, or even sharing with other cats. Try keeping the litter about 2 inches deep and scoop daily.

Stress & Change:
Big changes—like moving, new pets, or even outdoor cats nearby—can stress your kitty out. Stress can lead to litter box avoidance or even medical issues like feline idiopathic cystitis. Creating a calm, consistent environment can help.

Senior Cat Concerns:
Older cats may struggle with mobility or associate the box with pain. Consider a low-sided box in an easy-to-access location to help them out.

Kitten Know-How:
Young kittens may not have learned proper litter box habits yet, especially if they were orphaned early. Be patient and guide them gently.

If your cat is missing the box, don’t punish them. Observe, adjust, and consult your vet if needed. With a little care, most cats can get back on track!

☀️Keep Your Dog Cool & Safe This Summer!🐶

While our weather here in the Pacific Northwest can be a bit unpredictable, those hot summer days are just around the corner! Now’s the perfect time to get ready and make sure your furry friend stays safe, cool, and comfortable when the temperatures rise.

Hydration is key! Make sure your dog always has access to fresh, cool water whether they’re indoors or outside. Add a few ice cubes to their bowl for a refreshing treat, and don’t forget to bring a portable water bowl when you’re out and about.

Create cool spaces by offering plenty of shade with trees, umbrellas, or a dog house. Cooling mats, vests, or even a kiddie pool can help your pup beat the heat. On especially hot days, it’s best to keep them indoors with air conditioning, especially if they’re a breed that’s prone to overheating.

Protect those paws by avoiding hot pavement. A good rule of thumb: if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their feet. Try to walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening when the ground is cooler.

Exercise smart by limiting strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day. Keep playtime short and sweet, and always monitor for signs of overheating like excessive panting or drooling.

Don’t forget sun safety! You can use pet-safe sunscreen on light-skinned dogs, especially on their ears and nose, and limit their time in direct sunlight during peak hours.

Let’s keep those tails wagging and our pups happy, healthy, and cool all summer long! 😎🐕 Share your favorite summer dog pics or tips in the comments!
